Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters - Jabba the Hutt #1!

In the Star Wars universe, the ruthless bounty hunter known as Boba Fett is a character that needs no introduction, and now he’s just been given the most annoying nickname by a character that was literally just introduced in this issue! Jango Fett has got to be rolling over in his grave after hearing this one.

Part of the line-wide Star Wars crossover event dubbed War of the Bounty Hunters, Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters - Jabba the Hutt #1, by Justina Ireland, Ibraim Roberson and Luca Pizzari, tells the story of the cloned badass, Boba Fett, set just before and during the events of this particular crossover. Seeing half of the galaxy’s bounty hunters fighting for the ownership of the recently frozen in carbonite rebel known as Han Solo, Boba and a newly introduced bounty hunter going by the name of Deva Lompop, are pitted against one another in a way that only Jabba can arrange.

But the story implications of this issue play second fiddle to the reveal of a nickname for Boba that doesn’t exactly jive with his cool demeanor and penchant for shooting people in the face when it suits him. And based on the fact that this “old favorite bounty hunter” of Jabba’s even has the gall to circumvent the already awesome name Jabba’s current “favorite bounty hunter” has, says a lot about the equal badassery of Deva herself, even if the nickname given to Boba is one that isn’t exactly the best fit.

Boba Felt called "pup"

Calling Boba “pup” for no immediate or apparent reason, Deva gives Boba a nickname that’s highly annoying, and kind of doesn’t make sense in the grand scheme of who Boba Fett is as a character. And even though it’s unclear as to how many times Boba and Deva have met in the past, “pup” brings about insinuations that Boba is either brand new to this bounty hunter game (he’s not), is Jabba’s pet of some sort (also not), or simply that these two have a history together pre-War of the Bounty Hunters where “pup” is more of a callback name than anything.

But perhaps the oddest part of this newly minted nickname is that Deva isn’t even the only one using it. In fact, she somehow gets Boba to refer to himself as “pup” during their quick scuffle at the end of the issue, and more surprising, the slug lord himself, Jabba, also sneaks in a “pup” reference as he refers to Boba; something that is annoying for sure, but kind of funny coming from a tub of lard like Jabba.

So while Boba and Fett are probably two of the coolest names this side of the Outer Rim, Deva calling Boba “pup” at literally every opportunity she can find is as annoying as it is head-scratching. Luckily, Boba Fett will always be remembered as one of the most efficient and effective bounty hunters in the Star Wars universe regardless of what he’s being called at the moment, so as far as fans are concerned, “pup” is a nickname that can be relegated to the trash compactor.
