With the upcoming release of Star Wars: Hunters, fans of the franchise have a lot to look forward to in the realm of video games. Ever since the Star Wars films first debuted, the franchise has always made for a memorable gaming experience that has spawned fan-favorite characters of their own.

Whether it was dark antiheroes such as Galen Marek or familiar faces such as Luke Skywalker's, the video games have a life of their own when it comes to great characters. Though there are a plethora of great Star Wars video game characters, only the best left an impression on fans and continue to appear in the extended universe.

RC-1138 (Star Wars: Republic Commando)

RC-1138 issues orders to his men on the battlefield in Star Wars Clone Commando

Though being a clone somewhat robbed him of a chance of having a dynamic personality, RC-1138 of Republic Commando was nevertheless an exciting character. Leading the notorious Delta Squad, "Boss" as he was referred to, conducted some of the most dangerous missions of the Clone Wars. Trained by the Mandalorian Walon Vau, "Boss" was uniquely suited for combat more so than his clone counterparts.

Though it received positive critical reviews, Republic Commando was a cult hit for the Star Wars video game franchise and took time to get the recognition it deserved. The Delta Squadron as lead by "Boss" has taken on legendary status within the fandom, and even survived as part of the canon after the transition to Disney.

Nym (Star Wars: Starfighter)

Nym looks on angrily from Star Wars comics

As a Feeorin, the pirate Nym is known for his hot temper and overwhelmingly arrogant personality. Despite this, the co-star of Star Wars: Starfighter is still one of the most beloved members of the extended universe. Leading his Lok Revenant fleet during the tail end of the Galactic Republic era, Nym used his pirating skills to assist in the resistance against the Trade Federation.

While Starfighter is somewhat lost in the shuffle of Star Wars games, many fans believe it deserves a modern remake. A large part of its popularity was its characters, and Nym stood out the most among a pretty stacked cast. What makes him such a great character is that he has anti-hero tendencies, but he ultimately stands for what is right.

Luke Skywalker (Super Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back)

The Star Wars video games are known for creating new and exciting characters, but they can also breathe new life into existing ones as well. Luke Skywalker is the hero of the first trilogy, and that made him the most common protagonist for early Wars games from the arcade to the home consoles.

Super Star Wars transformed the familiar films into over-the-top platforming epics that put the power of the force in the user's hands. Luke isn't the only playable hero in the game, but his force powers and exciting lightsaber make him the best. The SNES was a limited console, but Super Star Wars was the first game that made users feel like they were part of the game, and being able to play as Luke was a big part of that.

HK-47 (Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic)

Throughout the Knights of the Old Republic storyline, Revan had a slew of great companions, but few were as memorable as HK-47. The powerful droid programmed especially for assassinations was a trusted ally to Revan before having his memory wiped and forgetting all about him.

HK-47 programming made him hostile towards most living things, but he especially detested humans who he referred to as "meatbags". Despite his attitude problem, HK-47's deadly efficiency made him a force to be reckoned with, and one of the best characters to come out of the Knights of the Old Republic games.

Iden Versio (Star Wars: Battlefront II)

Star Wars Battlefront II Iden Versio

Even though she is the daughter of an Imperial Admiral, Iden Versio proved herself to be a deft officer and didn't need nepotism to succeed. In the Battlefront II game, Versio lead the Inferno Squad in infiltrating and destroying the Dreamers faction which crippled the Rebels.

Though she could be considered a villain for her affiliation with the Empire, her narrative is a big part of the game, and fans come to get to know her well. She has a mountain-sized chip on her shoulder, and will stop at nothing to prove her worth. She may be villainous, but she is still a fascinating and dynamic character to play as.

Cal Kestis (Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order)

Cal Kestis

The Jedi purge was a dark moment in the Star Wars canon, and it spread the remaining Jedi across the galaxy as they were forced into hiding. Cal Kestis of Fallen Order survived the purge as a young man, though is master wasn't as lucky.

Fallen Order was praised for what it added to the canon, and Kestis is certainly one of the bright spots. Initially hesitant to resist the Empire, Kestis is prodded out of hiding and become a full-fledged adversary to the Sith. Kestis is haunted by survivor's guilt, and it colors his interactions with the outside world.

Dash Rendar (Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire)

If Han Solo is known for his roguish charm, Dash Rendar took things to a whole other level of smarminess. A smuggler and mercenary, Rendar first appeared in Shadows of the Empire before spinning off into various other pieces of Star Wars media.

Cocky and self-sure, Rendar had no love lost for his fellow smuggler in Solo. Shadows of the Empire was set between the films of the original trilogy, and was known for bringing the famous scene on Hoth to life in video game format. Despite his attitude, Rendar could back up his bravado and even went after Boba Fett in a one-on-one battle.

Galen "Starkiller" Marek (Star Wars: Force Unleashed)

Complicated anti-heroes are nothing new in the Star Wars canon, but few had the same depth as Galen Marek. Taken by Darth Vader at a young age, the powerful force user was his secret apprentice who eventually became a skilled assassin for the Empire.

Excluded from becoming a Sith Lord, Marek brewed a plan to help his master depose of the Emperor but was eventually betrayed by Vader. As the star of the Force Unleashed games, Starkiller is essentially the hero, though he is nothing if not villainous. Marek's tragic backstory makes him somewhat sympathetic, and his eventual turn on his masters was as inevitable as it was satisfying.

Kyle Katarn (Star Wars: Dark Forces)

Star Wars Kyle Katarn Canon Return

Originally debuting in Star Wars: Dark Forces, Kyle Katarn has a lengthy and twisting life story that saw him go from imperial soldier to Jedi Knight. Originally a member of the Empire, Katarn defected from the ranks and joined the rebellion. Eventually he learned of his force abilities and put them to use a member of the New Jedi Order.

Because of his past, Katarn always doubted himself despite his amazing abilities. He accepted that he was a Jedi, but always operated on the outside and never allowed himself to fully integrate into the practice. Despite this seeming lack of confidence, Katarn could also be witty and clever, and his overwhelming curiosity is what drove him the most.

Revan (Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic)

Star Wars KOTOR Delayed Darth Revan Canon Shadow of the Sith Novel

Set in the distant past of the Star Wars universe, Knights of the Old Republic explored a shadowy figure who was integral to the Sith mythos. Revan originally fought in the Mandalorian wars alongside his fellow Jedi, but his cynical and tactical mind led him down the path of darkness.

Unbelievably calculating and cold, Revan is the hero of the games despite being a terrible heel. Essentially the inspiration for all future Siths, Revan's militaristic personality would influence the Star Wars universe and help set in motion the chain of events that would lead to the films.
