Star Wars Battlefront 2 director Bernd Diemer confirms there will be no season pass for the game's DLC, instead opting for "something better." Hot on the heels of an exciting trailer and the annoucement of a release date for Star Wars Battlefront 2, fans of the action shooter series are excited to learn more about this anticipated sequel. We already know that the title will feature brand new playable characters, expanded online multiplayer, and couch co-op (for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions specifically), but information surrounding Battlefront 2's downloadable content (DLC) has been sparse until now.

The gaming community has been somewhat touchy concerning DLC (season passes more specifically). Season passes have generally served as a good way to save money on extended content, but one glaring issue has always remained: The specifics of future DLC are not always detailed to the consumer at launch. Fortunately enough for fans, it appears as though Battlefront 2's developers, Electronic Arts (EA) and Dice, have something else in mind.

Game Rant is reporting that ahead of the title's reveal at Star Wars Celebration, the game’s creative director, Bernd Diemer, confirmed there will be no season pass for Star Wars Battlefront 2. Instead, EA and company will opt for "something better."

We don’t have a season pass. We decided on that, and it’s one of those difficult decisions because it has so many implications all around. When we looked at the way Battlefront had evolved over its lifetime, with the DLC and everything, we decided, ‘You know what? For this type of game, season passes are not the best thing. We need to [take it apart] and come up with something better.

While it is exciting to hear that EA and Dice have heard the criticism of fans and plan to make changes moving forward, we are still unsure as to what Diemer and the rest of the team have in mind. Some may jump to conclusions – asserting that these quotes serve as confirmation of free DLC – but EA has currently made no such claim. However, it should be noted that the free DLC approach worked before, most recently with Blizzard's character shooter and Game of the Year winner, Overwatch.

While we’re not ready to confirm any live service plans just yet, what we can say is this we heard the feedback from our Battlefront community loud and clear. We know they want more depth, more progression, and more content. So we’re focused on delivering that in every dimension of Star Wars Battlefront 2. We’ll have more to share about our plans soon.

Overall, this is good news for gamers. Segmented gaming communities are bad for both the consumer as well as game publishers. And with EA Play – an annual trade show for the publisher which will run from June 10-12 this year – mere months away, fans should expect to hear more concerning Battlefront 2's DLC plans before long.
