The Star Wars universe is one of the largest and deepest realms of the science fiction genre. It's a galaxy far, far away stuffed to the brim with various species, planets, star-systems, and celestial bodies. Sure, we can name several of our favorite leading and supporting characters like Luke, Vader, or Yoda, but what about the cast of hundreds?
There are loads of secondary and background characters that populate the universe but like all actors and extras, they have names. Even some of the most hardcore fans can't name these characters, but we'd like to introduce you to ten background characters you didn't know had names.
Plo Koon
Though he saw some serious action during the Clone Wars, most fans only recognize him from his seat on the Jedi Council. This crawfish-looking Jedi Knight is Plo Koon, a resident of the planet Dorin who served with the likes of Yoda, Mace Windu, and Obi-Wan Kenobi in their fight against the Sith.
Plo Koon is definitely one of the most eye-catching characters in the prequel trilogy, mainly due to his outlandish and semi-unidentifiable design. He might not be the prettiest face in the galaxy, but his heroic deeds during the Clone Wars won't be forgotten.
Salacious Crumb
If there's one thing this guy is known for, it's his obnoxiously creepy laughter. Meet Salacious Crumb, court jester to none other than Jabba the Hutt himself. This gangly little Kowakian Monkey-Lizard is somewhat of a fan favorite to those well-versed in the original trilogy, but some just think of him as the little goblin-thing in Jabba's palace.
Though Crumb's career ended with the assault on Jabba's palace, he and others of his species can be seen quite frequently in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando. So on your next trip to Batuu, keep an eye out for these little monsters.
Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes
Next to "The Imperial March," the jazzy little melody by Mos Eisley's Cantina Band is perhaps one of the most-played songs played on the Star Wars soundtrack. But like any good house band, they don't just go by the name of their employer or place of employment. Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes!
They might look like your standard big-headed-aliens, but they can dish out a swingin' jazz groove better than any band this side of Naboo. They might be a one-hit-wonder, but they're one galactic band that won't be fading any time soon.
The Armorer
Not since Captain Phasma have we seen a beautiful and mysterious armor-clad mistress like The Armorer from The Mandalorian. This female forge-master was responsible for crafting beautiful and deadly tools of the trade for the Mandalorian members of the tribe. More artist than blacksmith, she's responsible for granting Jarren his iconic silver armor and Mudhorn brand.
With her fur cape, medieval-inspired helmet, and massive hammer, she looks like she'd be more at home on Game of Thrones than in a galaxy far, far away. With that in mind, she definitely deserves more recognition than she gets.
Sidon Ithano
Maz's Palace is essentially a grander version of the Mos Eisley Cantina in the Disney Trilogy of Star Wars films. And if you thought the smuggling adventures of Han Solo were impressive, you don't know Sidon Ithano. Though he appeared briefly in The Force Awakens, this scarlet swashbuckler has quite a reputation in Star Wars lore.
Known as the Crimson Corsair, Sidon Ithano is a space pirate with an almost legendary backstory in the extended universe. A dynamo pilot, a deadly warrior, and an experienced navigator, the red raider is definitely a character we'd love to see expanded upon in the near future.
Garindan
There are loads of Star Wars characters that can be identified by their look alone, and if there was anyone that embodied the occupation of enemy spy, it's Garindan. With a nose like that, it's hard keeping it out of other people's business, so it's no wonder this cloaked creep is considered the best spy in Mos Eisley.
Responsible for informing the Empire of C-3PO and R2-D2's whereabouts, this guy sells his super-spy abilities to the highest bidder and has been under the employment of several other shady characters like Jabba the Hutt. To say he doesn't look the part would be grossly untrue.
4-LOM
In the realms of Star Wars background characters, there are few with such high regard and reputation as Vader's troop of bounty hunters seen in The Empire Strikes Back. These guys mean business and they look it, but one of them catches our eye the most outside of Boba Fett and IG-88, another droid by the name of 4-LOM
Despite his insectoid appearance, 4-LOM is actually a repurposed protocol droid in service to the Galactic Empire. Little is known about this mysterious mercenary, but his devious reputation is definitely something worth notoriety. He might not be IG-88, but a protocol droid gone rogue is definitely something of merit.
G2-4T and G2-9T
We've talked about the movies, we've talked about The Mandalorian, but how about we take a trip to the most magical place on earth and go for a ride on Star Tours at Disney's Hollywood Studios? Before boarding your Star Tours cruiser with C-3PO and R2D2, you might notice a quirky pair of droids in baggage claim before you board.
These two bird-footed bots are G2-4T and G2-9T, and they provide a little extra hardwired humor before guests enter the attraction. One works the X-ray machine and observes the baggage contents, the other does the security check and makes snarky remarks, but both are memorable characters in this fan-favorite experience.
FN-2199
Known to the fans as TR-8R, this meme-spawning Stormtrooper of the First Order is really named FN-2199, and he singles out Finn during the battle at Maz's castle with a Z6 baton in hand. If you haven't put two and two together, the pair of them were on the same squadron, so it makes sense that 2199 would be a little testy upon their reunion.
The guy is a riot-control trooper with a knack for his laser-powered instruments of bludgeoning, and he deserves more attention outside of a meme. Don't worry FN-2199, we salute you.
Yaddle
We began our list with a member of the Jedi Council, so it makes sense to end with one too. But although our last character might not be as decorated as Plo Koon, she definitely deserves some recognition. Though she is one of the wisest and most mysterious members on the council, she's known for being the only known female of Yoda's species.
Both Yoda and Yaddle share more than a few elements in common, but along with being the only two we've seen of their species, they've both struck up some serious debate amongst fans thanks to The Child and possible ties they might have in The Mandalorian.
