Andy Serkis wants to direct a Star Wars project after being a part of the sequel trilogy and Andor. Serkis played an instrumental role in both the sequel trilogy as Snoke and the first season of Andor as Kino Loy. He has been a part of countless franchises, but now he wants to step behind the camera to add his own voice as a storyteller to a galaxy far, far away.

Screen Rant spoke with Serkis at Star Wars Celebration after the Lucasfilm Showcase panel. He revealed that he "would love" to direct a Star Wars project in the future and discussed playing different Star Wars roles on both the big and small screens. Check out what he said below:

I would love to. I really would genuinely. I think that this universe holds a huge fascination for me. I think I am one of the rare actors who's had the opportunity to play two characters in it. But I would love to.

Which Project Could Be A Perfect Fit For Andy Serkis' Star Wars Directorial Debut

Star Wars eras

Serkis has tackled different genres and is no stranger to helming a new installment in an existing franchise, but the question with Star Wars becomes: what type of project would best fit his storytelling style? Serkis could dabble in Star Wars television to start. This would allow him to work with the more established voices of Star Wars, either with Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau in a future season of The Mandalorian or even teaming up with Tony Gilroy again and returning to Andor, which is halfway through filming its second season.

Another possibility would be exploring one of the unexplored eras of Star Wars. The franchise is finally moving beyond the Skywalker Saga, beginning with The Acolyte, which takes place at the end of the High Republic era, which until now has only been explored through comics and novels. Going even further back is James Mangold with a film set 25,000 years in the past in an era called the Dawn of the Jedi. Star Wars is also delving into the era after the Skywalker Saga, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directing a movie set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, which will star Rey in an era known as the New Jedi Order.

Serkis exploring an era that has been untouched either in film or television would give him more freedom in storytelling. He could bring a new perspective to Star Wars, either with already existing characters or with completely new additions to the canon. Serkis clearly has a deep love and respect for this franchise, which seems to be one of the key elements to making great Star Wars, as proven by Favreau and Filoni. Hopefully, he is given the show to see what he can add to the ever-evolving tapestry of Star Wars behind the camera after bringing such amazing characters to life in front of it.
