Small-town Indiana native, Adam Driver has taken the world by storm since his role in the Star Wars sequel franchise as the powerful, but emotionally torn son of Han Solo and Princess Leia. Only active in Hollywood since 2009, the former Marine has gone from a Julliard hopeful to a twice Academy Award-nominated actor with no sign of slowing down.
Able to avoid the snares of Hollywood typecasting, Driver has played a wide variety of characters from different walks of life and all with their own unique quirks. Some may be more likable than others, but Driver brings a special something to every character that he plays.
Jamie – While We’re Young (2014)
Noah Baumbach's dramedy about the steady approach of middle age and searching for a connection with one's former youth showcases Driver as the clever and subtly manipulative Jamie, a wannabe filmmaker seeking to ride the coattails of a one-hit-wonder documentarian.
Not only is Jamie self-centered and entirely focused on his own goals, he's sneaky about it. Nearly everything about the friendship between Jamie and Josh is a lie. He goes against all of his advice concerning ethics and even cheats on his girlfriend by kissing Josh's wife and then blackmails her with it.
Charlie Barber – Marriage Story (2019)
Noah Baumbach does it again in this tragically real depiction of the struggles of modern divorce. The thing about Charlie is that he is incredibly selfish. He cheated on his wife with his stage manager and then gets offended when Nicole is done playing nice and wants to make demands of her own.
Casually expecting the people in his world to revolve around him, he refuses to see Nicole's side when she's tired of it and decides to stop the charade. Neither party is innocent, but Charlie needs a reality check.
Officer Ronnie Peterson - The Dead Don’t Die (2019)
A quirky zombie comedy directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Bill Murray, The Dead Don't Die rides on its dry humor and fun zombie kills, but it was hit or miss with audiences.
Driver stars as Officer Ronnie Peterson, a member of the police force in the quiet, unsuspecting town of Centerville, where nothing bad really ever happens. Officer Ronnie is a genuinely good guy just minding his own business through life. He may be a bit awkward and even a little boring, but he's committed to his job and to his friends.
Philip Altman – This Is Where I Leave You (2014)
Based on a novel by the same name, This Is Where I Leave You tells the story of a disjointed family brought back together to honor last wishes after the death of a loved one.
The wildly immature baby of the family, Philip is constantly joking with or pranking his siblings, and is even dating his therapist. He is fun but not practical and probably not the best person to have a relationship with, friendship or otherwise. He has a lot of growing up to do, usually to the disservice of those around him, but he is fun at a party.
Allan – What If (2013)
Starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, What If (released in some countries as The F Word) centers around Wallace, a med-school dropout who has given up on love until he meets the perfect woman ... who happens to have a boyfriend.
Driver plays the role of Chantry's cousin and Wallace's best friend. He is a trainwreck of chaotic energy, but he is also strangely lovable. Slightly skewed morals and kitchen make out sessions aside, Allan cares about Wallace and does whatever he can to help his friend.
Flip Zimmerman - BlacKkKlansmen (2018)
BlacKkKlansman tells the shockingly true story of Colorado Springs police department's first black officer in the 1970s and how he infiltrated and became a card-carrying member of the KKK.
Driver stars as Flip Zimmerman, Ron Stallworth's partner and the face of the sting. A hard worker dedicated to his job, the race of his partner is the last thing on Flip's mind. Stallworth does have an effect on him, evident by his thought-provoking struggle with his own heritage as a Jewish man.
Adam Sackler – Girls (2012 – 2017)
HBO's Girls cashes in on its ensemble of totally unlikable characters. There's almost an art to it, and Adam Sackler is the Mona Lisa of the bunch.
A total dumpster fire of a human being with anger issues, sexual aggression, and addictive tendencies, Adam should be hated, but there's something empathetic, charming, and lovable about him at the same time. He has serious problems and he feels too strongly, but a lot of those feelings are pain. It's relatable and viewers give him chance after chance, just like Hannah.
Paterson – Paterson (2016)
Another movie directed by Jim Jarmusch, Paterson is a somber, introspective film about the quiet life of a bus driver with aspirations of becoming a poet.
Paterson is a kind, quiet man that keeps to himself. He doesn't really have anything exciting happen in his life and the same can be said about his personality. Even-tempered and sweet, he spends most of his free time writing poetry on his breaks, cuddling his wife, and supporting her latest career endeavor.
Kylo Ren – Star Wars (2015 – 2019)
Kylo Ren made his debut in The Force Awakens and continued to be one of the most important characters throughout the sequel trilogy.
Often thought of as a villain, it's painfully clear that he is tragically torn between his anger and the Ben Solo that he used to be that is pushed further and further away by Palpatine's systematic abuse and manipulation throughout his life. His struggle not only had Rey, but many Star Wars fans everywhere rooting for him to turn from the dark side.
Clyde Logan – Logan Lucky (2017)
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, this wacky Oceans 11-esque parody follows two West Virginia brothers and their wild attempt to pull off a heist during a NASCAR race.
Clyde Logan is a 6-foot-2, ex-military puppy dog. Having lost his arm in the war, he is perfectly content to be left alone to his work, happy to be bored in his life for once. Faithful to the core, he reluctantly goes along with his brother's plan based solely on brotherly love, loyalty, and the word "cauliflower." Everybody needs a friend like Clyde Logan in their life.
