The final Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer spoils a potentially major moment in the film: Rey and Kylo Ren working together to destroy Darth Vader's helmet. Set to wrap up the latest Star Wars trilogy and the entire Skywalker Saga, director J.J. Abrams is bringing mixing the old with the new. The new characters he introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens are still the leads, but he's also set to bring back The Emperor (Ian McDiarmid).
One other iconic artifact that Abrams is set to use again in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - aside from the remains of the second Death Star - is Darth Vader's mask. The helmet appeared in The Force Awakens and had Kylo speaking to it, asking his grandfather for help in resisting the pull to the light side. Previous footage for The Rise of Skywalker shown at D23 confirmed that the helmet will once again be featured in some capacity - but the final Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer for the movie appears to confirm its destruction.
Around the 1:51 mark of the new trailer, Rey and Kylo are shown working together and simultaneously using their lightsabers to destroy a black artifact. It is a quick moment, but it appears to be Darth Vader's helmet that is being destroyed. The mask or what is holding it looks to be the top piece and the all-white surroundings match the background of where Kylo was in The Rise of Skywalker's D23 footage - it was cut to make it look like he was looking at Vader's helmet emerging from a protective case.
The destruction of Darth Vader's helmet by both Rey and Kylo is a significant moment to see in the trailer to say the least. The inclusion of the mask pointed to Vader's presence once again looming, but this would indicate that at some point the two of them decide that it is best to destroy it. Theories have run rampant that Palpatine's spirit could be inside the mask so that he's who has actually been influencing Kylo all along. If so, this could be part of Kylo's redemptive turn by destroying the past with the help of Rey.
This isn't the first time that Kylo and Rey have teamed up either, as they fought off Snoke's Elite Praetorian Guards in a moment they both thought the other was turning. Now, it would appear that they are united once again in a desire to destroy what we believe to be Vader's mask. Kylo's anger over being lied to by Palpatine could be why he wants to destroy it, while Rey could be doing it to help Ben Solo do what he doesn't think he can do on his own. In any case, what brings Rey and Kylo together to destroy Vader's mask - and what happens after this moment - will be something that fans will likely have to wait to learn once Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters.
