Some people are speculating Lucasfilm will announce the Star Wars 9 title soon, but it likely won't be unveiled for a while. Director J.J. Abrams started rolling the cameras on the film at the beginning of August, and fans have been eager to learn anything they can about the Skywalker saga's grand finale. Plot details are being kept under firm wraps for now, but the studio has been transparent about certain aspects. Viewers know the plan for General Leia Organa in Episode IX, and there mercifully won't be a "will he or won't he?" debate about Mark Hamill's return.
One aspect that remains a mystery is the film's title, which will no doubt reveal plenty of clues about its narrative. Star Wars titles have a way of being very simplistic in regards to their relation to the movie's events. For example, The Empire Strikes Back was all about the Empire crushing the Rebels after the Battle of Yavin, and The Force Awakens dealt with Rey discovering her abilities. Since there's still more than a year until Episode IX releases, Lucasfilm is in no rush to share the title, but there are those convinced the reveal is right around the corner.
In the case of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, their titles were not announced until after their respective productions had wrapped. Star Wars 9 will be in principal photography through February 2019, so it would be reasonable to assume a reveal around that time - perhaps as part of a press release commemorating the conclusion of filming. This is very much in line with how Abrams' Episode VII was managed. Production wrapped on November 3, 2014 and the title was confirmed a few days later. The Last Jedi ended filming in July 2016, and its title wasn't announced until January 2017. Although, that had more to do with Lucasfilm's focus on promoting Rogue One. Since there are no other Star Wars movie between now and December 2019, the Star Wars 9 title should be public knowledge in February.
UPDATE: It has been rumored there will be a Star Wars 9 trailer before the end of 2018. That would likely predicate the release of the title earlier than initially expected. If there is no trailer, early 2019 is still the most likely title reveal date.
While that's just an estimate on our part, it is without question going to be announced well before Star Wars Celebration in April 2019. The tentpole should have a significant presence at next spring's convention, likely with a panel to debut the first teaser trailer (similar to the marketing strategies for the other sequel trilogy installments).
That hasn't stopped rampant speculation, which has been stoked by notorious social media prankster Mark Hamill. The actor cryptically tweeted "THE (to be continued)." on September 13, 2018. Since the titles for both Episode VII and Episode VIII began with the word "the," some believe Hamill is teasing the Star Wars 9 title. While it's certainly possible Star Wars 9 has another "the" name (it's like poetry, it rhymes), Lucasfilm isn't revealing it anytime soon.
