John Boyega jokingly tries to spoil Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in a fun social media post. Ever since the sequel trilogy kicked off in 2015, Disney and Lucasfilm made a point to run measured marketing campaigns that were light on actual plot details, relying more on tone and atmosphere to sell the films. Star Wars is a large enough property to get away with that kind of strategy, and the studio's really doubled down on it when promoting The Rise of Skywalker. They've been extremely secretive about what's in store come December, with even the final trailer barely skimming the narrative's surface.

Since fans are already purchasing tickets in record numbers, there's no need for Disney to spell out a plot outline in advertising. Still, some people felt let down by the recent look at The Rise of Skywalker, and are eager to find out where the story is actually going. Boyega, who is a big fan himself, is no doubt aware of this, and is having a little bit of fun tapping into the demand for more information.

On his official Instagram page, Boyega shared a humorous video where he (in jest) reveals more about The Rise of Skywalker. It contains well-placed censors, blurred out images from the previous movies, and even an Adele reference. Watch it for yourself in the space below:

Pranks like this aren't anything new in Hollywood; multiple members of the Avengers: Endgame cast pulled similar stunts in the build-up to that massive blockbuster. And even in the Star Wars universe, Mark Hamill was notorious for his teases of "trailers" and other treats fans might enjoy. Boyega is continuing that tradition, having a great deal of fun with it. It goes without saying a Star Wars movie isn't going to include an Adele theme song a la Skyfall, or have a key sequence where characters play a real-world chess game. Boyega's followers seemed to understand this was all a joke, and appreciated his efforts to make them laugh. They obviously know the Star Wars cast is media-trained extremely well and won't accidentally let anything slip before the premiere.

Joking about The Rise of Skywalker spoilers is all fun and games now, but the tone will be dramatically different in a couple months. Once the film is released to the general public, there will probably be pleas from the cast and crew to not share any of the major twists and turns. It wouldn't be out of the question for there to be an Endgame style "spoiler ban" in place for the first couple of weekends, ideally giving everyone an opportunity to see The Rise of Skywalker fresh - the way it was meant to be seen. Director J.J. Abrams in particular likes to play up the mystery box, and Disney's intentionally holding a lot back in the trailers. It would be a shame if someone had the film spoiled ahead of time.
