Star Wars 9: Sith Trooper Design Officially Revealed

The Sith Trooper design from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is officially revealed, ahead of San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Lucasfilm is once again forgoing a Hall H panel to promote their upcoming blockbuster, but the studio still plans on having a presence at next week's convention. There will be the customary smaller panels for the company's other branches (like publishing) to showcase upcoming content across other mediums. And, one of the staples of the show floor is the Lucasfilm booth, which has all kinds of things on display.

One of the biggest draws of the Lucasfilm booth is the opportunity to see screen-used costumes up close. In the past, the studio has used venues like Comic-Con and Star Wars Celebration to unveil first looks at new suits of armor months before they premiere on the big screen. This year, SDCC attendees will be able to see the next flavor of stormtrooper.

Today on the latest episode of The Star Wars Show, the design of the Sith Trooper was unveiled. As one can see, it's an all-red suit of armor, making this a striking contrast from a number of the other variants that have been seen in the other movies. You can take a look at the Sith Trooper debut and first-look tie-in products in the video below:

It shouldn't come as a surprise that The Rise of Skywalker features a new spin on the classic stormtrooper concept. All previous movies to include stormtroopers added at least one new variant to the mix, most recently the Death Troopers of Rogue One and the Executioners in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. What's most interesting about Star Wars 9's newcomer (besides the red armor) is the designation of "Sith" Trooper, implying these soldiers are aligned with the Dark Lord of the Sith. That leap makes sense, seeing that Emperor Palpatine is making a surprise return in The Rise of Skywalker. However, rumors online have suggested these Sith Troopers are loyal to Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren, so it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out. Through two movies in the sequel trilogy, Kylo has not been revealed as a Sith (they were a relic of the past he wanted to end in Last Jedi), meaning this raises a lot of questions.

What will also be fascinating to see is what the Sith Troopers actually do onscreen. Dating back to Boba Fett in the original trilogy, Star Wars has a bad habit of marketing "cool-looking" villains to generate hype, only for them to underwhelm in the actual movie. The sequel trilogy tried to make some strides in this department with the praetorian guards, but most fans would agree Captain Phasma was a wasted opportunity. The hope is the Sith Troopers get at least one action scene to demonstrate their skills, and ideally they'll be a lot more than eye candy when The Rise of Skywalker enters theaters this December.
