Rey isn't satisfied with Kylo Ren's answer regarding the truth about her parents and is determined to uncover the real truth for herself in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The truth about Rey's parentage has been one of the most significant mysteries surrounding the Star Wars saga since The Force Awakens.

Kylo Ren revealed to Rey in Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi that her parents were simply nobodies, junk traders who sold her off for drinking money. While many fans doubted that Kylo was telling Rey the truth and was only attempting to turn Rey to the Dark Side, what will Rey choose to do with the First Order's leader's revelation in The Rise of Skywalker?

Actress Daisy Ridley has a lot of thoughts on the subject, but was careful not to reveal too much in a recent interview with EWRidley acknowledged that, "the parents thing is not satisfied-for her and the audience." Echoing the sentiment that Kylo Ren's reveal shouldn't be taken on surface value, Ridley emphasized the importance of Rey determining the truth for herself and how that path will play into the character's arc ultimately culminating in The Rise of Skywalker.

"“It’s not that she doesn’t believe it, but she feels there’s more to the story. And she needs to figure out what’s come before so she can figure out what to do next…”

Rey Fighting Kylo in Rise of Skywalker

The questions and fan theories Rey's origins began when she made her first appearance in The Force Awakens. Kylo Ren drove the speculation to a screeching halt when he told Rey the truth after their unlikely team-up in The Last Jedi, but insinuated that he was merely telling her what she had known all along. Star Wars fans were ultimately disappointed with the outcome, with many continuing to believe that Kylo Ren was lying to Rey in an underhanded way to turn her to the Dark Side.

The importance of family and lack thereof has long been a theme throughout the entirety of the Star Wars saga. What with Darth Vader ultimately defeating Emperor Palpatine (or so we thought) to save his son Luke Skywalker, and Kylo Ren's betrayal of Luke and Han in order to be more like his grandfather, the cycle of the inherent conflict between the Light Side and the Dark Side continues to spin relentlessly as fans await The Rise of Skywalker.

With the latest trailers showing intriguing spots featuring Dark Rey, and Kylo Ren and Rey teaming up to destroy Darth Vader's mask, the question about Rey's origins remains an enigma that will hopefully be answered in the final film. Or perhaps Kylo Ren's truth is the only truth. After all, the heroes of the Star Wars sagas have always had to face the truth that one's family doesn't determine their ultimate fate. Regardless if Rey discovers some new facets of her past, more than likely the heroine will have to decide which path she chooses to take alone. Who is Rey really? That's for her to decide.
