Rey and Kylo Ren's Force-connection will reportedly deepen in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Disney and Lucasfilm's new Star Wars trilogy has brought back quite a few familiar faces during the first two installments, but the story that J.J. Abrams started in Star Wars: The Force Awakens focuses primarily on Rey and Kylo. Both are powerful Force users, but their connections to the larger story could not be more different. Kylo is the son of Leia Organa and Han Solo, while Rey has no ties to what has happened in the past (as far as we know).

The two of them have gone on very different paths beyond what side of the Force they tap into, but the new trilogy has dedicated a fair amount of time to show just how similar they are. Rian Johnson took it a step further in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, where the two suddenly were connected through the Force by Snoke. The connection allowed them to see and talk to one another across the galaxy. Despite their opposing goals, they both believed that the other would turn to help them when the time came. This didn't happen and instead saw The Last Jedi end with Rey appearing to close the door on their connection.

In Vanity Fair's detailed report on The Rise of Skywalker, though, they revealed that the connection might play a larger role. Disney, Lucasfilm, Abrams, or cast members didn't directly confirm this, as the information instead came from a source close to the film. The mysterious source revealed, "their Force-connection will turn out to run even deeper than we thought."

Rey and Kylo talk in an elevator in The Last Jedi

It's an interesting tidbit to get about The Rise of Skywalker at this stage and immediately will make many reconsider what we know about the connection. Snoke says in The Last Jedi that he is the one who bridged the two together through the Force. He says that the purpose was to capture Rey so he could learn where Luke Skywalker is hiding. But, since he was the one who connected Rey and Kylo, many wondered if his death would also mean the end of it. This does not appear to be the case if it is returning in a more in-depth fashion in The Rise of Skywalker, but the connection running deeper could also mean that Snoke wasn't the one who bridged their minds.

Snoke is far from trustworthy, and even though he's displayed incredible amounts of power that make it believable he could connect Rey and Kylo through the Force, it deepening in The Rise of Skywalker could point to other possibilities. We know that The Emperor is returning in some form in the final installment of the Skywalker Saga, and with theories already out there that he's been pulling strings for years, it wouldn't be the most shocking thing if he was the one who truly connected the two. Of course, a deeper meaning for the connection could also reignite speculation that Rey is a real Skywalker, so she and Kylo have this connection through their lineage. All of this is just speculation at the moment, as the rumored "Force Flash Fights" could be an extension of their connection too. Regardless of how it factors into Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it should be fascinating to see whatever Abrams is planning.
