Every New Planet Confirmed For Star Wars 9 (So Far)

Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker Planets Header

As is the case with all Star Wars movies, this year's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker features plenty of new planets and locations that fans have never seen before. As Star Wars fans head into the final chapter, there will be plenty of familiar faces and age-old conflicts coming to the forefront, but where those faces go may be entirely different.

There are a handful of new planets which have been teased both in The Rise of Skywalker teaser trailer as well as a cover story for Vanity FairThe settings shown in these two key pieces of promotional material tease new planets of differing climates with possible hints as to what we can expect from the story based on why certain characters are there.

Of course, the planets revealed in the teaser trailer and magazine cover story may not be the only locations that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker visits when the movie hits theaters this December. But, for now, here are all the new planets that have been revealed so far.

Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker Trailer - Rey

It was first thought the desert landscape shown in the Rise of Skywalker trailer was Tattooine or Jakku, two planets connected to Skywalker saga protagonists (Tattooine being Luke Skywalker's home planet and Jakku being Rey's). But it was confirmed in the May Vanity Fair photoshoot for the film that the desert planet Rey is seen on in the trailer is Pasaana. The planet is home to the Aki-Aki, a newly-introduced species, and is located on at the far reaches of the galaxy. However, it's still unclear why Rey is there and working on her Force training when it's an entirely new location to her and to fans.

Rogue and possible bounty hunter Zorri Bliss (played by new cast member Keri Russell) hails from the planet of Kijimi. Kijimi is a snowy, rocky planet home to the Thieves' Quarter, where other scoundrels, thieves, bounty hunters, and neutral yet morally dubious folk reside. Possible shots of Kijimi may have been shown in the Rise of Skywalker trailer, showing off the dark, craggy landscape and the buildings perched precariously on them.

Kylo Ren's Star Destroyer

Kylo Ren's Star Destroyer, The Finalizer, will be a prime location in Rise of Skywalker. We've already seen a preview of it in the VF photoshoot for the film with General Hux and Allegiant General Pryde (newcomer Richard E. Grant). As with other Empire ships shown in past films, The Finalizer will be a key location regularly returned to for check-ins involving Kylo, Hux, and Pryde plotting their moves throughout the film.

The Planet Luke & R2-D2 Watch Go Up In Flames

One of the most enigmatic images from the VF photoshoot for Rise of Skywalker revolved around Luke Skywalker and R2-D2. Luke's appearance in the photoshoot is a surprise because he died on Ahch-To in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. This photo could be representative of a flashback of Luke possibly revisiting the Jedi Temple fire the night Kylo Ren escaped. It's never specifically mentioned where Luke's Jedi Temple was located but this was a pivotal moment in Kylo's life and in the Skywalker saga which could be worth revisiting.

The Jungle Planet Where Leia And Rey Hug

Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker Trailer - Leia

The final new planet was glimpsed in the trailer but featured no specific landmarks that make it easily identifiable other than a jungle. This seems to be the planet where the remaining Resistance members have found safe haven since Leia is still a General overseeing Resistance operations and Rey would ostensibly reconvene with the Resistance on their chosen planet. Since any footage of Leia in Rise of Skywalker has been mostly pulled from unused footage Abrams shot on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there's a chance this planet is D'Qar, home to a Resistance base featured in the film. Or, it could be an entirely new planet.
