John Boyega has praised Colin Trevorrow's narrative arc for his character, the former stormtrooper Finn, in the unused script for Star Wars 9. Boyega, who was chosen to appear in J.J. Abrams' first Star Wars outing, The Force Awakens on the strength of his performance in Joe Cornish's cult British movie Attack the Block, played the character across all three of the sequels, though Finn's arc was increasingly sidelined in The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker, in favor of focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey and Adam Driver's Kylo Ren.

Boyega himself has spoken out about the way Finn was portrayed in those films, asserting that his treatment is part of a larger problem in how characters of color are treated in big franchise movies. Trevorrow, who took charge of Jurassic World and upcoming sequel Dominion, was originally attached to write and direct the final film in the Skywalker saga. Details from his unused script for the movie, titled Duel of the Fates, leaked in January this year and it included a much more satisfying narrative arc for Finn, including a sequence where he and Rose Tico lead a revolution on Coruscant.

Now, speaking to Yahoo!, Boyega reveals that he's seen the script leaks from Duel of the Fates, including a piece of concept art that shows Finn leading the revolution on Coruscant (which you can see below), and thinks the plot would have been "dope." Boyega goes on to add that what makes characters so interesting is when they're given moments like that, saying that black characters are rarely given that chance. He ends by confirming that he's definitely done with the Star Wars movies and the character of Finn, jokingly saying unless they want him to voice the character for an animated series that he can record from home. You can read his full comments below:

I think Colin Trevorrow was going to tell that story. That image of Finn with the blue flag, and you have the AT-ATs lined up with tribal marks, and the stormtroopers take off their helmets. That would have been sick! That would have been dope, man, hands down. I felt it was important for me to talk about a truth that is embarrassing to talk about. We all know that what makes roles so lucrative [are] the moments you give them. If Captain America isn’t given the scenes to boost his representation, and to make him enjoyable for you guys, we won’t think he’s cool. Why shouldn’t Black characters and Black actors also fight for that same kind of representation? I think it’s a done deal with that. I’m a Mandalorian fan, so Lucasfilm is doing very well with the TV shows. An animated show would be dope! We could do it from home.

John Boyega Loves Finn's Story In Colin Trevorrow's Unused Star Wars 9

Based on the reports, there is no confusion as to why Boyega would have been happy with Trevorrow's vision for Finn in Star Wars 9. Rather than being sidelined, he and Rose (who barely gets a cameo in The Rise of Skywalker) would have played a key role in the plot, and been given their proper hero moments. Poe Dameron, who was also largely wasted throughout the trilogy, would also have been given a proper hero moment, though Oscar Isaac has less to be aggrieved about with his portrayal in Rise of Skywalker.

Regardless, it's yet another reminder of what could have been. There's no guarantee that Trevorrow's film would have been perfect, but there's also a lot of evidence that it would have been a more satisfying end to the trilogy than J.J Abrams' divisive movie. It's a pity, as Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker is set to be one of the last Star Wars movies for a number of years, and the franchise legacy is tainted a little by its poor reception.
