A new piece of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker fan art has Rey channeling not just the dark side but the work of Lizzo. As a singer-songwriter, Lizzo has released three studio albums, the third of which reached #6 on the Billboard charts. The album, titled "Cuz I Love You" also spawned the single "Truth Hurts", which went on to become a viral sleeper hit. Lizzo performed the single at the recent MTV Music Video Awards - arguably stealing the show in the process. She also doubles as an actress, and will be seen on the big screen alongside Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers. Lizzo also lent her voice to the animated film UglyDolls.
Star Wars, meanwhile, has been similarly dominating discussion on social media. Not only was the first official trailer for The Mandalorian released, but fans were treated to another look at what's being described as the concluding chapter of the Skywalker saga. The D23 trailer for The Rise of Skywalker boasted the kind of spectacle and intrigue the franchise has become known for over the decades. The most talked-about and fiercely debated aspect of the new footage, however, came in the closing moments. Looking particularly Sith-esque in a black robe and wielding a red, double-bladed lightsaber, it appeared that Rey had turned to The Dark Side.
The actress who plays Rey, Daisy Ridley, even teased that the turn is real. Still, fans remain somewhat unconvinced, and believe what's shown is a vision similar to Luke Skywalker's experience on Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back. Whatever the case ultimately ends up being, fans are already embracing the potential in various pieces of fan art and edited videos. One such piece from Rachael Stott was posted on Twitter. The stunningly drawn image features Dark Side Rey in all her glory, with the lyrics of Lizzo's top-selling single written as graffiti behind her. Check it out below:
The inclusion of Lizzo's lyrics works especially well in the context of the upcoming Star Wars installment. Another lingering mystery surrounding Rey is that of her heritage. Star Wars: The Last Jedi seemingly offered the answer that Rey came ostensibly from nothing, with no direct link to any of the saga's famous families. The reveal was met with equal amounts of acclaim and derision. Some believed it was a genius move to show that anyone from any kind of background and upbringing could be a heroic Jedi. Others, meanwhile, felt it was lackluster and not in keeping with the world originally conceived by George Lucas. As such, many latched on to the theory that Kylo Ren was lying when he passed along the crucial information.
J.J. Abrams has returned to direct the latest chapter in the intergalactic saga. Given the director's penchant for tapping into feelings of nostalgia and echoing story beats from the original trilogy, it is easy to understand why some believe he'll retcon at least some of Rian Johnson's subversive moments. The above image, as well as being beautifully realized, leans very much into that theory. Rey's attire and weapon of choice, after all, bears more than a little resemblance to Darth Maul. As such, it would appear that the "DNA Test" mentioned in the image jokingly confirms that connection, and reveals that Rey is "100% that b*itch"...or, in this case, 100% that Sith. Fans will finally know what's really the case, though, when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker finally hits theaters.
