Star Wars 9 Has 135 Minutes Of Music - Hinting At Even Longer Runtime

Star Wars 9 Rise of Skywalker Title and Stars

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will contain 135 minutes of music, which points toward an even longer movie runtime. Legendary composer John Williams will be back for the ninth episodic film in the space opera, expressing his personal interest in wrapping up not just the sequel trilogy, but the whole Skywalker saga as well. And he's making sure that the upcoming score will mirror the culminating elements of the J.J. Abrams-written and directed flick.

Plot details for The Rise of Skywalker are still tightly under wraps. The movie's first teaser released back in April during this year's Star Wars Celebration barely gave fans any narrative. Instead, it featured the current main players in the universe, with Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega) seemingly going on an adventure, and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) potentially moving forward with his plans to "let the past die" with a reunion with the Knights of Ren. And of course, it also confirmed that Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) will be back. With so much story left to tackle, fans kind of expected Episode IX to run a bit longer, but it might be longer than originally anticipated.

Veteran studio percussionist and John Williams' brother Don Williams stopped by an Academy of Scoring Arts-hosted event for a study on 1993's Jurassic Park score where he provided an update regarding the ongoing work for The Rise of Skywalker. In the clip, shared by the Scoring Arts YouTube channel, Don revealed that John has composed 135 minutes worth of music for the film, hinting at its total running time. He adds that John's using every single theme he's ever written for the whole saga. Watch the full clip below.

It's difficult to predict at this point what will go down in The Rise of Skywalker - especially considering where things were left off in  Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Episode IX is confirmed to pick up a year after the last time fans saw the heroes and villains, so that means that both sides could be having their own adventures only to head into a collision later on in the film. In any case, fans are most likely assured another showdown between Rey and Kylo Ren, which will be an interesting reunion given how their final interaction in Episode VIII played out.

Thus far, the longest film from the whole franchise is The Last Jedi, running 152 minutes, followed by Star Wars: Attack of the Clones which ran for 142 minutes. Assuming that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is longer than both of these films, there's a very slim chance that fans will have any issues with it. After all, it'll be the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga, therefore, it'll have to wrap up or put an exclamation point on multiple big storylines  from the three trilogies. Abrams can take as much time he needs to tell a satisfying conclusion, which won't be an easy feat considering the varying generations of fans that the space opera franchise has garnered over the last few decades. If anything, Avengers: Endgame proved that viewers will be willing to sit through a three-hour film, and more if it's a highly enjoyable and fitting culmination.
