Star Wars 8 Teaser Description: Luke Speaks at Last

Mark Hamill as Luke filming Star Wars: Episode 8

In the lead up to Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, one of the biggest questions for fans was what role Luke Skywalker was going to have. He was completely absent from any of the marketing, and many expected him to triumphantly return in the knick of time and save the day. That was far from the case however, as the secluded Jedi remained alone and unseen for the entire film, until the closing moments. There on Ahch-To, the franchise's newest lead Rey (Daisy Ridley) encountered the original - and right when Luke seemed ready to speak, the film's credits started rolling.

Throughout this past year and the marketing for last December's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, fans could not stop thinking about what Luke's first words will be in Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi. With footage from the film now being shown to Disney shareholders and reporters, that question may finally be answered.

Daniel Miller from the LA Times was kind enough to share these reactions online, through his Twitter account. In doing so, he revealed bits from a number of scenes shown that include Luke getting his lightsaber back, his first words, and the appearance of many other familiar faces in The Last Jedi teaser footage:

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" clip is being screened. But it's a joke, sort of! We just got a few seconds of Rey handing Luke a lightsaber.

We just saw more "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" footage. In it, Luke asks Rey, "Who are you?" Then we see her deftly handle a lightsaber.

Also making appearances in "The Last Jedi" footage: Chewbacca, General Leia Organa and Finn.

One last thing on the "Last Jedi" footage: We saw all sorts of settings -- mountains, oceans, forests, deserts. Look suitably epic, exotic.

More on "The Last Jedi" clip: We saw a shot of an X-wing wobbling mid-air, under attack inside a giant ship. Looked like a wounded bird.

Star Wars Celebration Orlando 2017 Rey Sketch

While the descriptions are not as great as seeing this for yourself, it does provide us with some new information. "Who are you?" may not be the juiciest first words from Luke, but it does seem to confirm that he does not know Rey, or at the very least recognize her. Unless he is simply testing her to see if she is aware of any previous relationship that he will reveal later on, this quote taken at face value would imply that Luke is most definitely not Rey's father or her former trainer.

With Luke's first words now possibly revealed - as there is a chance he says something else before this line - the rest of the details from the footage are not as revealing. Appearances by Chewbacca, Leia, and Finn are hardly surprising given their status within the franchise, and lines up with reports of who would appear in The Last Jedi teaser. But, the possible turmoil Poe and his X-Wing found themselves in is interesting (although it is not confirmed he is the one piloting the damaged ship). An X-Wing under attack inside a larger vessel could indicate that the Resistance is trying to sabotage one of The First Order's newest weapons, but something goes horribly wrong.

All of this will make much more sense once everyone can see the footage for themselves and dissect the smallest bits of information even further. With reports pointing to the first teaser for The Last Jedi coming at Star Wars Celebration 2017, fans are just over a month away from the footage being released. In the meantime, this should hold fans over.
