Months ahead of its theatrical release, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is already dominating in the realm of social media buzz. Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rian Johnson – whose previous credits include several episodes of Breaking Bad and the neo-noir sci-fi hit Looper – the next installment in the Star Wars saga will feature a central narrative that picks up right after the events depicted in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
While little is known about the plot at the time of this writing, The Last Jedi is being hyped as more than an Empire Strikes Back remake, with Johnson having said as much multiple times. Featuring plenty of new characters and extraterrestrial creatures alike, Johnson’s take on the Star Wars franchise will reportedly see Rey and Finn spend some time apart – as portrayed by Daisey Ridley and John Boyega, respectively. On that note, the latest word has the new movie heating up conversation on social media.
According to Variety, The Last Jedi saw a significant spike in social media buzz last week, generating 77,000 new conversations according to data compiled by comScore and PreAct – with a total count standing at 2.37 million conversations. Bolstered by the unveiling of new toys and an EW feature, Johnson’s forthcoming franchise film beat out all of its competitors – with Deadpool 2 generating 30,000 new conversations, Mother! generating 29,000 new conversations, and Thor: Ragnarok generating 18,000 new conversations.
Based on the numbers alone, it would appear that general moviegoers are more eager than ever to see the followup to the 2015 blockbuster hit that is The Force Awakens. Teasing a troubled backstory for Finn and more footage of Supreme Leader Snoke – as voiced by War for the Planet of the Apes star Andy Serkis – The Last Jedi is destined to rake in money at the box office when it finally reaches theaters later this December.
Certainly, the true test of Disney and Lucasfilm’s revived franchise came last year with the first Star Wars anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but it was greeted by box office success. Looking ahead to The Last Jedi, it’s all set to deliver another monumental mainstream success for the powers that be at Disney and Lucasfilm. Only time will tell whether or not diehard fans will be pleased with the finished product, but here’s to hoping for the very best in the meantime.
