A Japanese promotional leaflet for this December's Star Wars: The Last Jedi teases new details about the upcoming film, including a "shocking" reveal that could top anything from the previous movies. With Lucasfilm keeping such a tight lid on the eighth chapter of the Skywalker family saga, fans are eager to learn anything they can by any means necessary. Recently, toy leaks have hinted at character names and new ships, but details are extremely hard to come by. Following the template of the fantastic marketing campaign for The Force Awakens, even the Episode VIII teaser trailer barely touched on the story and focused more on tone and atmosphere.
Of course, there has been no shortage of Star Wars rumors to keep viewers occupied, but sometimes those tantalizing bits of speculation can prove to be false. Official advertising materials are typically more reliable, which is why there is sure to be great interest in a newly unveiled Japanese promotional leaflet that seems to hint at information regarding the plot and characters of Last Jedi.
A scan of the flyer can be seen on Star Wars News Net, as well as a rough English translation. Some of what is said on it is common knowledge by now, and basically a recap of Episode VII. That said, there are other things to glean from it. It's hinted that General Leia Organa will accompany Poe Dameron, Finn, and BB-8 on a mission, which slightly contrasts with reports implying Finn is with Kelly Marie Tran's Rose for a majority of the film. Perhaps the five of them form a group going on a quest, considering Finn's bromance with Poe will continue to develop and Leia allegedly has a larger role. Oscar Isaac previously described a physically intense scene Carrie Fisher performed, so it sounds like the General will be back in the action one way or another. It will also be fascinating to see what Kylo Ren's "ambition" is now that he's completely given into the Dark Side. An encounter with Rey and Luke Skywalker is presumably in the cards.
The most eye-catching reveal on this leaflet, however, is the promise of "the most shocking truth in Star Wars history," which is quite a bold statement. There are a number of mysteries presented in The Force Awakens that need answering, including Rey's heritage, the backstory of Supreme Leader Snoke, and why Luke went into exile, so this revelation could pertain to any of those - or maybe something else entirely. It will obviously be difficult for Rian Johnson to top "I am your father" from The Empire Strikes Back, but he's looking to truly challenge the audience with his installment. Mark Hamill mentioned he fundamentally disagreed with how Luke was written when he first saw the script, so the director probably has some surprises up his sleeve. Viewers expecting a safe remake of Empire should prepare for a film that's "different" than its predecessors.
Granted, Lucasfilm might be setting themselves up for failure by promising a "shocking truth surpassing the previous stories," since it will be difficult for some to manage their expectations with proclamations like that in mind. If The Last Jedi doesn't deliver, certain viewers will be disappointed in the end result. However, it's worth keeping in mind that this is simply a piece of promotional material designed to drum up interest in the new movie, and it's also possible that some things got lost in the translation. That said, Johnson has never been a director to pull punches (his Breaking Bad episodes are evidence of that), so his mysterious twist could very well change how audiences see the entire Star Wars saga.
