While longtime fans celebrated the returns of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the film was more noteworthy for introducing a new generation of characters to the galaxy far, far away. Episode VII featured a fresh trio of heroes to carry the franchise moving forward in Rey, Poe Dameron, and Finn. Thanks to endearing performances by Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, and John Boyega, viewers immediately took to them and can't wait to see all three return in next year's Star Wars: Episode VIII.
Moviegoers may recall that Finn was extremely worse for wear at the end of The Force Awakens, having his back sliced open by Kylo Ren during their lightsaber duel on Starkiller base. When Rey left her friend to find Luke, Finn was deemed to be alive by the Resistance medical staff, but there were many questions about how exactly he would get back in the action. Now, some details about his recuperation in Star Wars 8 have emerged.
According to Making Star Wars, Finn has been placed in a bacta suit to recover from his injuries. For those not in the know, bacta is a healing substance used in the Star Wars universe that can regrow body tissue, including nerves, skin, and muscles. The most famous instance of it being used in franchise canon is The Empire Strike Back, where Luke was dunked in a bacta tank following his escape from the wampa cave. A mysterious shot from the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story teaser trailer seems to show that a bacta tank will appear in the spinoff as well.
Per the report, Finn's first scene in Episode VIII involves him being removed from the suit. He is said to be "in better condition than ever before," indicating that the treatment had the desired effect. Once he's out of the suit, Finn "embarks on a journey" that is most likely a mission for the Resistance. One can only hope that Poe is going along for that ride as well, since the chemistry between Boyega and Isaac was one of Force Awakens' many highlights. Fans want to see more of those two together, and given that Rian Johnson allegedly revised the script to increase the roles of the returning characters, chances are parts of Star Wars 8 will be a buddy adventure starring Finn and Poe (and possibly BB-8 too).
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Episode VIII picks up just moments from where its predecessor left off, a first for the series. With that in mind, it's nice to see that Star Wars 8 won't simply skip over how Finn got back into fighting shape. Many fans probably theorized that bacta would be involved, but now it's been all but confirmed. As stated above, that is similar to how Luke recovered from his wounds, but a bacta suit (and not a tank) is a new spin that should be interesting to see. Making Star Wars has an image of what it might possibly look like.
Admittedly, this isn't the biggest revelation about Episode VIII, but it does answer one of the lingering questions following Star Wars 7. The rumor mill for the highly-anticipated sequel has been fairly quiet, but perhaps this will kick off a wave of reveals about the film. Regardless of whether or not the speculation is true, it's always fun to hypothesize about Star Wars, and typically rumors give viewers plenty to think about. With so much unknown about the movie, there's a lot people want to find out.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016, followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII on December 15, 2017, the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25, 2018, Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019, and the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
