In just a couple of weeks (as of this writing) Rian Johnson will wrap principal photography on Star Wars: Episode VIII. He and his crew are now in the homestretch, concluding a globetrotting adventure that included stops in Croatia, Ireland, and London. Fans are eager to learn anything they can about the project, and it sounds like this month's Star Wars Celebration in London will be the source of some new information - with Johnson attending the Future Filmmakers panel at the event.
Until then, moviegoers will have to make do with teases from the cast and crew, of which there have been plenty. In the social media age of movie marketing, some of the principal players have used their platforms to interact with the passionate fan base and offer them glimpses and hints of what to expect. Franchise star Daisy Ridley has kept an active profile through the process, occasionally sharing videos of herself training for her role. She's at it once again today, with a new intriguing element that's sure to get viewers buzzing.
The actress took to her Facebook page to post an impromptu #workoutwednesday video, as she found the time to go to the gym "between different set ups" as work on Star Wars 8 continues. You can check it out below:
As Ridley indicates, the one new detail here is the pillowcase on her head, which is supposedly to hide her "Rey hairstyle" from the watchful eyes of the general public. In The Force Awakens, Rey sported a very distinct hairdo that is now instantly recognizable. Her use of the hashtag #secrecyqueen indicates that she's supposed to keep the new(?) look under wraps until Lucasfilm is ready to unveil something. The reasoning for that is a question that begs to be answered, since not too many plot beats can typically be gleaned from the appearance of a character's hair. This development brings to mind Anthony Daniels' comments from last year, where he seemed incredulous at how far the studio goes to preserve the movie's twists and turns.
Still, Lucasfilm has shown that there is a method to their madness, and they've done a great job of controlling any and all reveals regarding the new Star Wars films. As ridiculous as it seems, they don't want Rey's Episode VIII hairstyle to be shown yet. One would have to think that it's different from Star Wars 7 and somehow factors into the narrative, representing the next step of the former scavenger's journey as she trains on Ahch-To with Luke Skywalker. Perhaps the altered 'do visually conveys a key aspect of her arc. Fans will just have to wait and see.
While this may not be the juiciest Episode VIII update, it's still an intriguing source for the latest mystery in a galaxy far, far away. Few would have expected that Rey's hair could be considered a spoiler, but Lucasfilm runs a tight ship and obviously has a plan on how to handle their prized series. If nothing else, Ridley's video will only increase anticipation for an image or early footage of Star Wars 8, so people can potentially see the new hairdo in action.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016, followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII on December 15, 2017, the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25, 2018, Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019, and the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
