John Boyega has revealed the names of a few personalities who filmed cameos for Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi. Reprising his breakout role later this year as one of the new faces of the famed space opera saga, the British actor fully joins the Resistance in its relentless battle to defeat the First Order. This time, he goes off on a mission of his own with lore newbie, Rose, played by Kelly Marie Tran. While specifics of their pivotal mission is still tightly under wraps, reports suggest that it has something to do with the mysterious character of Benicio del Toro named DJ.
But aside from the confirmed cast of Boyega, Tran, Del Toro and other returning, as well as, newbie actors to the lore, several high-profile people are said to going to have a part in The Last Jedi. The catch is these personalities will not have a huge impact on the narrative, simply serving as fun little cameos peppered throughout the movie. And while Lucasfilm likes to keep almost everything a secret with Star Wars, Boyega dropped some juicy intel on the sneaky appearances by well-known that fans should keep an eye on when the film finally drops this December.
During his guest stint at BBC Radio4 (via Screen Daily), the budding actor has shared that British Royal Princes Harry and William have both filmed a short bit for The Last Jedi, as well as, prolific English actor, Tom Hardy. Unfortunately, Boyega did not dive into the specifics of the cameos which in hindsight preserves the element of surprise once the three suddenly pop up on the big screen during the Rian Johnson film:
“I’ve had enough with those secrets. They came on set. They were there. I’m sick of hiding it. I think it was leaked, anyway. There were images. Every time I get asked, I have to dodge it. I’m tired of dodging it. They were there. So was Tom Hardy.”
While Boyega made it sound like he was slightly going rogue - revealing something that he probably should not, it is more likely that he had the go-ahead from Lucasfilm before he nonchalantly dropped the information. Not only do Star Wars actors get the briefing of what can and cannot be said in terms of press junkets prior to a movie release, Boyega has also mastered the art of answering questions without giving away information that might spoil anything with regard to the famed space opera franchise.
Both the Princes and Hardy had long been rumored to have shot a bit or two for The Last Jedi but it is only now that the running speculations are confirmed. Earlier this year in April, news broke out that William and Harry got will be playing stormtroopers in the film, but since the galactic soldiers wear masks, it would be difficult to spot the royals - unless of course, they have some speaking lines. The bit follows Daniel Craig's secret cameo in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens where the current James Bond actor took the role of JB-007 - the stormtrooper who was watching Rey during her captivity in the Starkiller base but was eventually mind tricked to let her go.
Harry, William and Hardy join singer Gary Barlow on the list of celebrities confirmed to have a cameo in Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi. Being the sequel to the current trilogy, fans can look forward to a lot of character-centered stories, especially with the mysterious exile of Mark Hamill's Luke and his sudden change of heart when it comes to the Jedi.
