Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens has been a project shrouded in secrecy ever since it was announced over three years ago following Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm. The official marketing campaign has kept the film's biggest plot points close to the chest, with even the third and final trailer choosing to not share too many story details. It's been a smart strategy on the studio's part, since speculating about what will happen in The Force Awakens has become part of the fun as fans wait for it to hit theaters.
The narrative of Star Wars 7 is being so heavily guarded that Lucasfilm has not even released a plot synopsis to give fans a tease of what to expect. Now, we may have our first plot summary for The Force Awakens, coming from an unlikely source.
For their Force Awakens Play Set (which features Finn and Rey), Disney Infinity 3.0 has the following description, which seems to share some information regarding the movie (hat tip Making Star Wars):
"Return to a galaxy far, far away alongside new heroes and old friends as they search for a much needed ally. – FINN: A soldier on a path to adventure and danger. – REY: A true survivor who is resourceful and capable."
This doesn't look like much at first glance, but fans will find plenty to read into with the "search for a much needed ally" line. Followers of the Star Wars 7 rumor mill will recall that the longtime speculated plot involves Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) finding Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) original lightsaber and embarking on a quest to find the Jedi Master, who is secluded in isolation. With just under three weeks to go until the movie comes out, this is about as close to confirmation as viewers will get that the film could be a search for Luke.
It's always possible that the Disney Infinity summarization is simply augmented to sell more merchandise (which allegedly was the case with some Halloween costumes), but that doesn't appear to be the case here. The trailer for the game is built around the notion that players can experience the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, using scenes from the various film previews to market the product. There's a reason the play set won't be available until December 18. Lucasfilm doesn't want spoilers getting out ahead of time (children's books notwithstanding).
Even though it's becoming clear that the group of heroes is looking for Luke, there are still plenty of mysteries left to be solved. This synopsis is extremely brief, and it doesn't really reveal anything new. Director J.J. Abrams has previously stated that the elder Skywalker is a key aspect of the narrative, and Luke's absence from the promotional campaign is no accident. From that, it's safe to assume that the whereabouts of Luke will be one of the main driving forces of the story and an aspect better saved for the film's premiere. The good news for fans is that they don't have to wait much longer to learn all the answers.
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th, 2015, followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on December 16th, 2016, Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26th, 2017, and the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25th, 2018. Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to reach theaters in 2019, followed by the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
