[Mild SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Force Awakens ahead.]

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens serves as the beginning of a new Star Wars movie trilogy set over thirty years following the events of Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. J.J. Abrams' Star Wars film in turn picks up in a time when the deeds of original trilogy heroes Luke (Mark Hamill), Leia (Carrie Fisher), and Han (Harrison Ford) have become the stuff of legend.

That's especially true for younger people in a galaxy far, far away, who has either only heard the stories from second-hand sources or heard distorted versions spread by The First Order: the organization that seeks to succeed where the Galactic Empire failed. However, moviegoers will be brought up to speed on what life is like in the Star Wars galaxy in The Force Awakens from the vantage points of such younger characters as Jakku spaceship scavenger Rey (Daisy Ridley), the First Order stormtrooper who's known as simply Finn (John Boyega), and the Resistance X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac).

Poe Dameron recently got his own Force Awakens character poster, and Isaac (speaking in Spanish) introduces the newly-released Star Wars TV spot that's been featured, above. Moreover, during the Star Wars: The Force Awakens press junket day, Isaac revealed the following about Poe's history (h/t Variety) - specifically, how the actor played a role in crafting a backstory for the character has since become part of the franchise canon, thanks to the comic book series "Star Wars: Shattered Empire":

“After we started filming, I was talking a bit about where could Poe have been. At the very end of ‘New Hope,’ the medal ceremony, one of Guatemala’s claims to fame is that that last shot where the ships are leaving, where you see the temples, was shot in Guatemala. For me, the fact that I was born there and that’s a rebel base and I’m playing a Resistance fighter, maybe Poe was there, that’s where he’s from, and then this comic book comes out in ‘Shattered Empire’ where Poe’s parents ended up going to Yavin 4 and making sweet love. So that’s an amazing thing, if the first time you’re talking about where your character’s gonna come from, ends up in a comic book … it feels like we’re creating these things together.”

Interestingly, Dameron is the only one of the four pivotal new players featured in The Force Awakens - including Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) who belongs to a group of Dark Side of the Force users known as the Knights of Ren - whose last name is for certain known; and thus, he is the only one whose connection to other characters in the Star Wars universe (or lack thereof) is firmly established. This is no accident, of course, but proper answers aren't going to be provided to those questions until The Force Awakens hits theaters - and even then, the film will no doubt leave certain elements open for further exploration in future movies.

It's already confirmed that one Force Awakens character and their backstory will be fleshed out further in Star Wars: Episode VIII - and possibly beyond, for all we know right now - and Boyega has likewise teased that Abrams' film won't answer all of fans' questions about characters like Finn and Rey, either:

“I didn’t know much going in. I just remember during my time screen-testing, I was like, to Daisy [Ridley], ‘there’s no way that our stories are so simple,’ and we still don’t know! So I’ve still got some conspiracy theories as a fan as to where Finn comes from and I’m still trying to figure that out, but I like that it’s a mystery.”

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy also teased that the game plan for the future of the Star Wars franchise isn't firmly set in stone, but that future installments in this "Shared Universe" (be they saga movies, film spinoffs, TV shows, books, and so forth) are being constructed in careful coordination with one another:

“We haven’t mapped out every single detail yet. But obviously everybody’s talking to one other and working together … that collaboration is going to guarantee that everybody’s got a say in how we move forward with this.”

It's rumored that The Force Awakens presents the questions surrounding Rey and/or Finn's parentage, without providing a clear-cut answer in either case, as Boeyga indicates may well be true for the film. For example, it has already been confirmed that Rey was left behind on Jakku as a child by her parents (for what were no doubt important reasons that will be revealed in time, too). Moreover, assuming that the First Order's stormtroopers leave their families to train at a young age much like their predecessors did under the reign of the Galactic Empire (a process that Star Wars Rebels has shed more light on), it is plausible that Finn would not know a whole lot about his family, either.

Nevertheless, big things clearly lie ahead for these young protagonists featured in Abrams' Star Wars movie. Case in point: two new Star Wars promos for The Force Awakens have debuted (via ABC Family and Disney XD), further teasing Rey's mysterious history and what lies ahead for the character, as far as her own destiny is concerned. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th, 2015, followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on December 16th, 2016, Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26th, 2017, and the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25th, 2018. Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to reach theaters in 2019, followed by the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
