It was to be expected that fresh details on Star Wars: The Force Awakens - the seventh live-action movie installment in the Star Wars blockbuster franchise - would be unveiled on May 4th (a.k.a. Star Wars Day), ahead of the film's debut in December 2015.
So far, the goodies include a set video featuring interviews with co-writer/director J.J. Abrams and cast member Daisy Ridley. The latter is playing Rey, who (by the look of it) is the Luke Skywalker-esque protagonist of Force Awakens - complete with her own droid companion (BB-8) and a home on a desert planet (Jakku, not Tatooine). Joining Rey on her adventure will be Finn (John Boyega), the stormtrooper featured heavily in both Force Awakens trailers released to date; and, eventually, original Star Wars trilogy heroes Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), among other old friends of the Star Wars universe.
Vanity Fair has released additional images from its Force Awakens set visit, offering a new look at cast members Adam Driver (Girls) and Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina), as well as Abrams and Ridley filming a sequence that takes place on Jakku.
Check out those images, below:
Some stray observations/details worth noting:
- Driver is, in fact, playing Kylo Ren - the masked, dark robe-wearing, and three-pronged red lightsaber wielding dark Force user in Force Awakens, as has now been confirmed by Vanity Fair's article. Rumor has it the mystery "ice planet" that Kylo and his troops are on (in the above photo) is the setting of an important showdown between the antagonist and Force Awakens' heroes.
- Oscar Isaac, pictured above as the X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron, is confirmed to be an agent for The Resistance: the new name for the Rebel Alliance, working against the remnants of the Galactic Empire (known as The First Order). Isaac previously confirmed that when moviegoers first meet Poe in Force Awakens, he'll be carrying out a mission for a "certain princess" (Leia?) - before he crosses paths with Finn and Rey.
Moving on - check out Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave) in her motion-capture getup for Force Awakens, below:
The image above shows the "galactic travelers, smugglers, and other assorted riffraff" that hang around the main hall of the castle owned by pirate Maz Kanata - Nyong'o's character in Force Awakens. Maz will be an all-CGI alien in the film, as indicated by Nyong'o's mo-cap gear in the above pic. It's not clear yet where Maz falls on the scale of heroes and villains in Abrams' Star Wars movie, though she sounds like Jabba the Hutt - in that she's a crime boss whose allegiance may be foremost to herself, not The Resistance or The First Order.
Then again, rumor has it that Maz (previously rumored to be name Rose and brought to life via puppetry) ends up providing Rey and Finn with vital information for their quest in Force Awakens. Take or leave that for what it's worth.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens is directed by J.J. Abrams, from a script by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan and a screen story by Michael Arndt. The cast includes Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Max von Sydow, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, and Kenny Baker.
