Did you nab any new Force Friday Star Wars merchandise last week? Don't worry, there's a lot more coming.
Not only is Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens tracking to be the largest box office opening ever, but licensing deals (where the real money is) are predicted by analysts to bring an additional $5 billion in merchandise and publishing. So, next month you can play the Star Wars: Battlefront video game for a primer to the December 18th theatrical release of the next entry in the saga. And then on opening day you can pop on your Star Wars 7 special edition 3D glasses, and after seeing the movie, pick up the official art book on the way home for that perfect holiday gift from a galaxy far, far away.
Disney and Lucasfilm today unveiled the official art book for Star Wars 7, and in the same vein as their Marvel Studios, Pixar and other in-house movies, this one includes production paintings, concept sketches, storyboards, blueprints, and matte paintings.
The art up top by Doug Chiang makes up the cover of "The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens" which is written by Phil Szostak. The book chronicles the development of Episode VII from the first pitch meetings at Lucasfilm all the way through principal photography and post-production at Industrial Light & Magic.
The art collection features "hundreds" of images alongside interviews with the entire creative team. There are also art for ideas not used in this film as examples of what director J.J. Abrams and co. were thinking throughout the process. The timing couldn't be better since this item will undoubtedly be featured alongside related Star Wars works in every book store everwhere the same day the film opens, just in time for lucrative holiday season.
Maybe the book will feature other designs for Kylo Ren's crossguard lightsaber...
