Throughout all of the main Star Wars films, the Jedi Order was at the height of its power during the Prequel Trilogy. They had enjoyed a long period of relative peace and complacency. Yoda was at the helm of the Council during the final days of such a Republic but seeing as how it fell, perhaps the leadership responsibility was misplaced.

Because as it turned out, there might have been a more powerful Jedi than Yoda in the form of the underrated Mace Windu. He's a more cynical, aggressive, and adamant Jedi Master and raises arguments that he could have stopped what Yoda couldn't if only he were the Grand Master. Here's how well the two of them compare in terms of power.

MACE WINDU: He Wields A Purple Lightsaber

Most of the time, the lore of a lightsaber's color came first before the actual aesthetics. But in Mace Windu's case, actor Samuel L. Jackson merely "requested" a unique purple lightsaber and George Lucas couldn't say no to that. The lore was seemingly established afterward.

Even so, the lore backed up just how peculiar a Jedi Mace Windu is. The purple Kyber crystals are so rare that only the best and most special Jedi can harness their power. As expected, it matched Mace Windu's distinct outlook on the Force, where he sees and straddles the fault lines between the Dark and Light Sides of the Force like a boss.

YODA: He Has The Title Of Jedi Grandmaster

Of course, let's not forget who the Jedi Grandmaster is during the Prequels: The one and only hairy green Jedi, Yoda. He's become the poster boy of the Jedi and to be fair to him, it's not exactly easy to be Grand Master.

In order to become one, the Jedi Council has to unanimously elect him or her. Any Star Wars fan knows just how fickle and judgmental Jedi Masters can be with the Force concerned. They did elect Yoda for a good reason.

MACE WINDU: He Fought In More Battles

This could be chalked up to Mace Windu appearing younger than Yoda but nevertheless, the former can be seen leading multiple charges head-first especially in the Clone Wars.

Mace Windu never hesitates to lead troops into battle whether they're Jedi or clones and is always at the thickest of the fight. He even boldly tried to take on Count Dooku and Jango Fett at the same time whereas Yoda plays more of an armchair commander role.

YODA: He Led The Clone Wars On The Jedi's Side

Since Yoda was the Grand Master, he was the one responsible for leading the Jedi into certain directions that led them to victory after victory during the Clone Wars. This was where Yoda's strategic planning became more important than Windu's bravery.

The whole Council and even the Republic might not admit it, but Yoda was pretty much the Commander of the combined forces of the Clone Army and the Jedi Order. Too bad he didn't know he was doing half of Palpatine's work for him.

MACE WINDU: He Kept The Dark Side At Bay

It's not just Mace Windu's lightsaber that made him unique but also his fighting style, Vaapad. It's the 7th form of lightsaber combat and is often avoided by Jedi as it requires Force users to tap into the dark side for a bit of aggression and relentlessness.

Mace Windu was essentially setting himself up to become a Sith every time he fights but impressively enough, he never succumbed to the dark side. He managed to channel its power without losing the Jedi way... most of the time.

YODA: He's More In Tune With The Force

As powerful a swordsman or fighter Mace Windu is, viewers don't usually see him use his Force powers in the films although the Clone Wars cartoons show him Force-crushing General Grievous. Yoda, on the other hand, is more liberal in his use of Force powers.

He can easily levitate huge objects without tapping into the dark side. His Force powers are also not just physical but also transcends time and space, allowing him to see into the future - albeit inaccurately.

MACE WINDU: He Kept Anakin In Check

Despite treating Anakin terribly half the time, it would seem that the Jedi Council is very much aware of how powerful he is and how he can surpass them all. Qui-Gon Jinn said so.

That's why not many Jedi Masters can contain Anakin's hotheadedness and rage, even Yoda and Obi-Wan find it difficult to suppress Anakin sometimes. Mace Windu, however, merely has to say "take a seat" to put Anakin in his place. It also appears only he has the courage to convey the denial for Anakin as a Jedi Master.

YODA: He's Nearly A Millennia Old

One simply cannot forget one of Yoda's most apparent quirks. Apart from being a dyslexic toad, Yoda is also a wise old oak. By the time of the Skywalker saga, he was already pushing 900 years old.

The amount of knowledge and the wealth of experience he has accumulated during all those years ought to make him a walking Jedi Temple Archive. As a wise man said, knowledge is power. Mace Windu simply can't match that.

MACE WINDU: He Defeated Palpatine

It would be fair to say that Mace Windu was probably the best combatant the Jedi Order had during the final days of the Republic and the start of the Skywalker Saga. That's because Mace defeated Darth Sidious/Palpatine with ease before flying out the Windu-- sorry, window.

Palpatine quickly dispatched three other members of the Jedi Council before Mace Windu taught him how to use the dark side in combat. Yoda, on the other hand, shamefully lost to Darth Sidious.

YODA: He Has A Force Ghost

Sadly, neither Luke Skywalker nor Rey ever saw an intense bald blue Force ghost telling to get back up and kick some Sith butt. That would have been motivating. Instead, it was all either Yoda or Obi-Wan doing the posthumous guidance.

That very well means Yoda did manage to transcend death more effectively and more persistently compared to Mace Windu. This pretty much makes Yoda immortal while being still able to troll Luke with lightning.
