The trailer for the upcoming series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has arrived. The Star Trek universe is expanding even further with Strange New Worlds, which was created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet for Paramount+, the streaming service that is also home to PicardDiscovery, and the Star Trek animated series Lower Decks and Prodigy. The series is a spinoff featuring characters introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, but it also functions as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, following Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), the man who led the crew of the USS Enterprise before the famous Captain James T. Kirk.

The other characters who will be carrying over from Discovery are Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as Spock. The rest of the Enterprise crew will be filled out by Babs Olusanmokun as doctor M'Benga, Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, Celia Rose Gooding as cadet Nyota Uhura (who, along with Spock, is a younger version of a character from TOS), and Bruce Horak as Aenar officer Hemmer. Christina Chong will also appear, playing La'an Noonien-Singh, who is a relative of one of the most iconic Star Trek villains of all, Khan Noonien Singh (originally played by Ricardo Montalbán, and then by Benedict Cumberbatch in the 2013 film Into Darkness).

Today, Paramount+ has released the first official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which comes to the service on May 4, 2022. It doesn't feature many glimpses of the characters at the center of the story, instead opting to build the atmosphere by showing various futuristic locales under a monologue about the glory of humanity's first contact with extraterrestrial life. It also highlights the return of Captain Pike, showing the dashing captain staring out the window of the Enterprise at the many adventures that lay before him. Check out the trailer below:

So far, there have not been many plot details released for Strange New Worlds. However, the creators promise that the show will be lighter in tone than Discovery, focusing more on episodic adventures like the original series, though it won't completely ignore ongoing serialized storylines. The show will give Pike the opportunity to explore new worlds and alien cultures, though certainly there will also be some overlap with the other series, considering how many familiar faces from the Star Trek universe the show already has.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will have a lot of fan expectations riding on its success. Especially considering how many ties the show has to the original series, it's under a lot of pressure to excel on a level that approaches the franchise's former glory. While it remains to be seen if it can meet this goal, the trailer certainly shows that it's embracing fun new terrains while digging deeper into a character who is finally able to fully step into the spotlight.
