Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has officially finished filming. Anson Mount, who plays Captain Pike in the upcoming series, provided the production update in a video posted to YouTube. The Paramount+ series has no scheduled release date but is set to premiere in 2022 following post-production.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will follow characters last seen in season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery, with Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn reprising their roles. The trio will be joined by a new supporting cast, including Celia Rose Gooding, who will play a younger Nyota Uhura. Mount's performance as Captain Pike in Star Trek: Discovery was especially singled out for praise from Star Trek fans. According to Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman, this fan response led to the spin-off series being commissioned. The series will take place in the decade leading up to the beginning of Star Trek: The Original Series and will have the chance to explore classic characters in greater depth.

Now, in an update to production, Mount has confirmed that filming of the series has concluded. During the video, Mount reflected on the filming experience, saying it had been "Such a journey, it has been an honor." He also took the chance to restate that the series wouldn't have taken place without fan support and enthusiasm, saying, "this is happening because of you, the fans. You made this happen, and we are so grateful for your support." Mount declined to set a date for the series' release but stated that Star Trek fans can expect the series next year, in 2022. The update will be welcomed by Star Trek fans who are being treated to an unprecedented amount of content. Alongside Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, active Star Trek TV series include Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and the upcoming Star: Trek Prodigy, which will have voice acting by Star Trek: Voyager stars Kate Mulgrew and Robert Beltran. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds sets itself apart by returning to the USS Enterprise and taking place earlier on in the timeline.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds producer and writer Akiva Goldman stated that, unlike other ongoing series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be closer in tone and format to the original series. Goldman suggested that the series will be more optimistic and episodic while still taking advantage of serialized storytelling for character development. A change in style and format would be a step away from Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard in particular, which have embraced season-long story arcs and darker themes. Whether or not this change will be welcomed by fans accustomed to Star Trek's new style is yet to be seen. However, being set on the starship USS Enterprise and with a cohort of beloved characters, fans are sure to be eager to learn more about the series in the upcoming months.
