Captain Pike is back in the chair, Number One has been safely rescued, and Mr. Spock is newly engaged, but despite all that excitement in just the first few episodes, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds still generates an aura of mystery. Set less than ten years before Captain James T. Kirk assumes command of the starship Enterprise, the series definitely charts its own course to seeking out new life and new civilizations.

While there are several well-known characters from Star Trek: The Original Series returning like Nurse Chapel and Cadet Uhura, many of them aren't the mature versions that fans might remember, and the presence of hostile newcomers to the crew like La'an Noonien-Singh and Hemmer provide the chance for dramatic tension. Amidst the thrilling world-building within the Star Trek franchise, it's only natural for fans to be curious about where this series will boldly go.

Will Pike Have Unbreakable Plot Armor?

Captain Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Due to what happened on Boreth, Pike can face any threat, alone, outgunned, outmanned, and still survive because he already knows his fate. In season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery he was much more of a rulebook captain, and in "Strange New Worlds", he tears out the page for General Order 001 and blasts it out the airlock, knowing Starfleet can never fire him. He knows what uniform he's got on when the irradiation happens.

Pike recites the names of the cadets he saves in the accident every night before he goes to sleep, but Number One feels like his fate can still be changed. Is it locked in because Pike makes the same choice to sacrifice himself in every outcome, and he will always make that choice because of the man he is? Or can he avoid destiny by the people around him encouraging him to find another way to live?

Will Samuel Kirk Become The New Guy Fleegman?

Samuel Kirk (Dan Jeannotte) and Captain Pike (Anson Mount) on the bridge in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

In Galaxy Quest, one of the most underappreciated movies from the '90s and a hilarious spoof about series like Star Trek, the character Guy Fleegman is generally the crew member intended to die on the away mission, and in "Children of the Comet", Samuel Kirk nearly assumes that role by touching an alien object and being severally injured.

Knowing that Samuel Kirk is James Kirk's older brother and that he lives at least until Star Trek: The Original Series, will he have plot armor incorporated like Captain Pike? Could he ostensibly interact with any new life form, or go on any dangerous away mission, continue to make increasingly risky — or ridiculous — choices, but never die?

Is La'an Noonien-Singh An Augment?

Star Trek Strange New Worlds La'an Noonien Singh

Longtime fans might have raised an eyebrow at the appearance of La'an Noonien-Singh given her relationship with Khan Noonien-Singh, one of Star Trek's best villains and the nemesis of Captain Kirk. Since she's arriving on the Enterprise years before Khan's frozen colony encounters the ship, its crew would have no idea about his race of augments.

La'an also might not know much about a relative from her distant past, except that when she's part of the away mission to rescue Number One, she seems notably nervous about undergoing the transformation necessary for her disguise, even refusing pain medication to make it more bearable. Perhaps it affects her augment biology?

Will La'an Become An Adversary Like Khan?

Strange New Worlds - Khan and Laan Noonien-Singh

When La'an is serving on the Enterprise, Khan Noonien-Singh would be asleep in cryogenic isolation. If she's at all aware of his past as a warlord in Earth's 20th century, will she uphold his ideals and become an adversary of the Enterprise and its crew?

Since Spock canonically serves under both Captain Pike and Captain Kirk, he should have mentioned encountering one of Khan's relatives to Kirk in The Original Series, but he doesn't. This presents potential plot holes and continuity issues unless La'an has to be killed and her death kept a secret.

Will The Gorn Make An Appearance?

A Gorn preparing to fight Captain Kirk in Star Trek

Star Trek: Discovery debuted as a series with a very recognizable race from both Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation; Klingons. Will its spin-off do the same by giving fans a peek at the Gorn? According to La'an Noonien-Singh's background, her entire family was captured by the Gorn, with her as the only survivor.

The Gorn as they appeared in The Original Series was, like the Klingons, a low-budget version of a much more impressive design, with a man in a rubber suit trading blows with Captain Kirk. If the Gorn do make an appearance in Strange New Worlds, the fans would no doubt be treated to an updated look.

What's Going On With Spock And Nurse Chapel?

Spock (Ethan Peck) speaking with Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

There are several well-known characters from Captain Kirk's crew aboard the Enterprise, including a younger Nurse Chapel, who detours from the demure personality she has in later years by appearing to be excited when a high-profile patient escapes from sickbay. Does she just love high stake situations and medical emergencies?

The Nurse Chapel that serves under Kirk's command only seems to like adrenaline-pumping action when it involves Mr. Spock. Speaking of that, given that she develops feelings for him in that era, it stands to reason that we'll see her flirting a lot more with this younger Spock as Strange New Worlds continues. Unfortunately for her, an unmistakable Spock character trait is being oblivious to her romantic overtures.

What About Those Redundant System Checks?

Hemmer in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Captain Pike was informed by Admiral April to get the Enterprise underway by skipping "the redundant system checks", despite the fact that the ship didn't have its chief engineer yet. Were those redundant system checks planted for a future episode payoff, one that finds the Enterprise suffering for its negligence?

Chief engineers like Geordi or Miles O'Brien would have been remiss to classify any vessel (or space station) as cleared for launch before doing any and all system checks. Perhaps that's why Chief Engineer Hemmer seems so grumpy when he first encounters Cadet Uhura?

An ancient Progenitor from Star Trek: The Next Generation

At the end of "Children of the Comet", thanks to some quick thinking by Captain Pike and some first-rate flying from Lieutenant Ortegas, the Federation is on good terms with the Shepherds, a race of beings tasked with protecting the comet (so long ago they can't even remember). The final exchange seemed to indicate that the beings might return in the future.

Are they perhaps connected to the Progenitors who seeded life in the galaxy? Do they originate from a home planet or are they confined to their ships, each one following a comet across the quadrants? They certainly present a fascinating species, with one of the coolest ships in Star Trek, blending the best of warp and generational capabilities and enriching the collection of beings who act as stewards of the galaxy.

Will There Be More Fun New Technology?

The crew on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

So far the series has established two fascinating pieces of technology; a way to genetically modify crew members into humanoid aliens, and a transporter setting that can sort out wardrobe malfunctions on the fly. Will there be other fun new instruments for the crew to use on their away missions?

The franchise has always pushed the boundaries of technology and given fans an opportunity to imagine what it would be like in the future, even going so far as to predict advancements in their own lives with things like datapads and touch screens. It will be exciting to see what unique new technological achievements lie ahead.

Does Each Episode Focus On A Different Character?

Young Uhura In Star Trek Strange New Worlds

The first episode so far focused on Captain Pike battling his inner demons, and the second on Cadet Uhura contemplating her future in Starfleet, presenting a possible approach to the episodic format that seems to characterize the series. Can fans hope to see more episodes devoted to specific characters?

Star Trek: The Next Generation was famous for Worf-centric or Data-centric episodes, with the former showcasing brutally dramatic storylines about honor and the latter ones about what it means to be human. Even for a serialized show like Star Trek: Discovery, one of its strongest episodes was all about Commander Suru on his homeworld. Hopefully, Strange New Worlds will give other crew members their due, from familiar faces like Doctor M'Benga, to new ones like Lieutenant Ortegas.
