Paramount has renewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for season 2 ahead of the series premiere. Spinning off from the events of Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will follow the crew of the USS Enterprise under the leadership of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck), and First Officer named Number One (Rebecca Romijn). The series is a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, taking place about a decade before Captain Kirk becomes captain of the Enterprise.

The series is set to tie heavily in with Star Trek: The Original Series as it will also feature Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), as well as a new character named La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), who likely has a connection to popular Star Trek villain Khan Noonien-Singh. The series is set to be closer in tone to the original series, showcased by the classic, colorful uniforms commonly associated with the Star Trek franchise. It has been heavily anticipated since it was announced, and it appears now that Star Trek fans will have a lot more to look forward to.

The fact that Paramount+ is confident enough in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for such an early renewal is a promising sign for the series. Paramount+ is heavily invested in the Star Trek brand, as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will now give them five Star Trek series on the air. The plan appears to be to have a Star Trek series on for the whole year, with one leading into another and looking to capture different demographics like the kid-centric Star Trek: Prodigy, legacy series Star Trek: Picard, or more broad adult-skewing comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks.

The premiere date of season 1 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds now comes a day after the fan dubbed Star Wars holiday, May the 4th, which many assume will be the premiere date for Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiering a day after a new Star Wars series shows the strong connection between the two prestigious sci-fi brands. With an early summer premiere date and recognizable fan-favorite characters like Spock that general audiences know, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds could be a big event series for Paramount+ and a possible crossover hit.
