UPDATE - STAR TREK STATEMENT: "At Star Trek: Mission Chicago, we inadvertently displayed posters with Spock and M’Benga’s names that were incorrect. Sometimes when you work at warp speed, mistakes are made. While Spock and M’Benga do indeed have first names, they have yet to be revealed."

After a 56 year wait, new posters for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have taken the unprecedented step of giving Spock an official full name. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the latest Star Trek spinoff series, following the adventures of Captain Pike, Lieutenant Commander Spock, and the rest of the crew of the USS Enterprise. The series is set to premiere on May 5th when it debuts on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes place after the events of Star Trek: Discovery’s season 2, which introduced audiences to new versions of characters of Spock, Captain Pike, and Number One, and will additionally act as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS). The series was commissioned off the back of the positive response that the new versions of those classic characters generated among the Star Trek fanbase and general audiences, and will aim to add more depth to their backstories. In addition, the show will flesh out characters like Dr. M'Benga, a young Uhura, and Nurse Chapel, as well as introducing completely new characters to round out the main cast.

Now, in a series of new posters unveiled at the Star Trek: Mission Chicago event, Star Trek has added even more to the character of Spock than viewers could have imagined. Star Trek has taken the opportunity to provide Spock, and Dr. M’Benga, with an official full name. The new character posters show the pair in uniform, against huge backdrops, with their full names embossed above the Strange New Worlds logo. The posters reveal that Spock’s full name is S'Chn T'Gai Spock, while Dr. M’Benga’s first name is Jabilo - the slightly easier to pronounce of the two. Check out the two posters with the link below:

The reveal will be a genuine surprise for long-term Star Trek audiences and is bound to generate a fair amount of discussion, not least with regard to pronunciation. Previously, the only canonical reference to Spock’s full name had come when the half-Vulcan told Leila Kalomi that his name was unpronounceable in the season 1 TOS episode “This Side of Paradise.” Some audiences might take issue with the reveal for answering questions that don’t need to be answered, but the names haven’t been plucked out of thin air and both came from Star Trek novels - though they are only now official canon.

The bold decision could set the tone for a series that seems determined to shake up the style of modern Star Trek. The team behind Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has promised audiences that the series will return to the franchise’s episodic roots, grounded in the optimism of Starfleet, while retaining some smaller-scale season-long story arcs. Even with this change, Spock’s new official name might take some getting used to as audiences wonder what other surprises Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has up its sleeve.
