Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek #6!As the god war rages across the Star Trek universe, a new role has been teased for Captain Sisko - one that flips the script on his role as the "Emissary." IDW’s new Star Trek series has brought Sisko back to our reality, just as a powerful force begins killing the universe's godlike beings. Now, the culprit stands revealed - and Sisko has an existential crisis, leading him to wonder if he is still the "Emissary"... and if he ever really was.

In Star Trek #6 - written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, drawn by Ramon Rosanas, colored by Lee Loughridge and lettered by Clayton Cowles - the God City of T'Kon is on a path for Earth, and a distraught Sisko is desperate to find a way to stop it. He decides to communicate with the City, "god to god." Sisko invokes the Prophets, and his mother, trying to reach out to the God City. When he is greeted with silence, he grows angry, questioning why the Prophets sent him back. Sisko wonders if he was sent back to kill, contemplating that instead of being the Emissary, he is actually meant to be the Prophets' assassin.

Captain Sisko Is Breaking Away from the Prophets

Captain Sisko was long ago named the “Emissary" - a representative of the Bajoran Prophets. This role was thrust upon him when he arrived at Bajor to take command of Deep Space Nine. Initially reluctant to be a messiah-figure, Sisko in time grew into the role, and came to understand its importance. At the end of Deep Space Nine, Sisko went to live with the Prophets in their wormhole, where he lived until the God War began. The Prophets sent him back to discover the culprit, but they have not been forthcoming with aid or information, offering either cryptic hints or insisting on very specific actions.

As the Prophets fail to offer aid for anything but a killing strike on Emperor Kahless - revealed to be the God-Killer - they have lost Sisko's trust, leading him to consider whether he'd rather be their killer or break off his loyalty to their will.

The Prophets Have Failed Their Emissary

Sisko beholds the power of the Prophets

Since Sisko returned to his original plane of existence, he has struggled with both his mission and his status as the Emissary, and the Prophets’ coy nature has not helped. The Prophets ripped Sisko away from his family and friends, and he has tried to reconnect with them, but thanks to his time away, this has proved difficult. This in turn has led him to question his role as the Emissary, and how he wants to live once his mission is over. Now, Sisko is weighing up whether he'd rather be the assassin of the gods or reject their yoke and make his own decisions about how to stop the God War. It's a decision that will redefine Sisko's future, and - whatever he chooses - leave him with a new role in the Star Trek universe.
