Over half a century ago, Gene Roddenberry unleashed a galactic adventure saga onto the small screen that boldly went where no other television series had gone before. Star Trek: The Original Series debuted on NBC in 1966 and forever cemented its place as one of the most groundbreaking works of science fiction ever created. Since then, Star Trek has developed a hardcore, long-lasting fanbase and expanded its stories into various mediums of entertainment, including movies, other TV shows, video games, comics, books, and more.

The best part about this? The Star Trek universe doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon, even after over a half century of boldly going forward with The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, the original movies, and the reboot movies.

Right now is an especially exciting time to be a Trek fan. In addition to having more upcoming projects in the long-running film franchise to look forward to, there is also a host of new television series in the works, both live-action and animated. Yet, that barely scratches the surface of the comics and upcoming books that are also in the works or that are possibly going to be in development. That said, we’re sure there will be even more announced in the near future, as well as it being a given that some shows and movies are still being kept under wraps for strategic reasons.

So, without further ado, here are 13 Star Trek Projects in Development (and 7 That Are Possibilities).

In Development: Discovery Season 2 - featuring Spock

Star Trek Discovery - Burnham and Saru

The first season of Discovery was a critical success and we can expect another season to come in 2019.

Production for season two officially got underway back in April, and Alex Kurtzman is supposedly directing the first episode. The next installment is expected to run for 13 episodes, but given that the first season was extended to 15 episodes while in development, who’s to say we won’t get more ?

What can we expect in the new series? Jonathan Frakes - who played Riker in The Next Generation and even served behind the director’s chair on the spin-off films First Contact and Insurrection -- spilled the news that a young Spock will feature in flashback scenes.

In Development: Quentin Tarantino Movie

Quentin Tarantino and Samuel L. Jackson in The Hateful Eight

Last year, it was reported that Quentin Tarantino is developing a new Star Trek movie for Paramount alongside J.J. Abrams. Furthermore, it is also believed that he’s going to direct it, which would mark his first foray into directing a big franchise feature-length.

The movie is said to be inspired by the old time-travel episode “City on the Edge of Forever”, which Tarantino is a vocal admirer of.

However, just because Tarantino is possibly going to direct a Star Trek movie that doesn’t mean he’ll be giving up his sensibilities either. According to reports, the project will be R-rated, which could mean a Star Trek movie punctuated with the director’s flare for violence and bad words.

Possible: The Wrath of Khan TV Series

Ricardo Montalban as Khan in Star Trek

Last summer, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan writer and director Nicholas Meyer revealed he was working on a new project not related to the latest show, Star Trek: Discovery, on which he serves as a writer and executive producer.

The project will be a prequel miniseries that will center around the exploits of none other than Khan Noonien Singh.

The rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, though the project going ahead does look promising. It was reported again earlier this year, when Kurtzman climbed aboard. While the show doesn’t appear to have been given the greenlight yet, at least it hasn’t been denied either. Only time will tell.

In Development: Transformers Crossover

Considering that Star Trek is dedicated to space exploration adventures, a crossover with a property like Transformers makes a lot of sense. If both were real, surely it would only be a matter of time before they crossed paths.

Of course, crossover ideas like these are nothing new in comics, but no matter how many times iconic properties come together in the same universe, seeing how well they mesh together is always an exciting prospect.

In Star Trek vs Transformers, scheduled for release this fall, the Enterprise crew will go up against the bad robots of Cybertron.

IDW Publishing will release the four-issue series, which is inspired by the original Star Trek and Transformers animated TV shows.

In Development: Star Trek 4

Earlier this year, Variety broke the news that S.J. Clarkson had been tapped by Paramount Pictures to direct Star Trek 4. Right now, key plot points are being kept close to the chest.

Sources say that Chris Pine’s character will meet his father (Chris Hemsworth) in a ploy involving time travel.

The biggest takeaway from this news, though, is the decision to appoint Clarkson in the director’s chair. This makes her the first female director to take the reins for a Star Trek project after all. Given the magnitude of this movie, the decision could prove to be yet another breakthrough in regards to more female representation in Hollywood. We aren’t there yet, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Possible: Starfleet Academy TV Series

Star Trek StarFleet Academy

A Starfleet Academy TV has been rumored since 2003. Originally, William Shatner pitched an idea to CBS that would have featured Kirk and Spock as youngsters as they trained to become Starfleet officers. The idea never came to fruition, but the idea was used for the 2007 novel Academy: Collision Course.

However, as part of Robert Kurtzman’s recent takeover of the Star Trek universe, a Starfleet Academy series could be coming our way in the near future.

Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are supposedly on board as showrunners, but that’s all we know about the show at the time of writing.

Given that Schwartz and Savage are experts at creating shows about young people, this is an exciting prospect to potentially look forward to.

In Development: The Next Generation Comics

Following the success and critical acclaim of Star Trek: The Next Generation: Mirror Broken and the follow-up Through the Mirror, Scott Tipton and David Tipton make their return to the comics universe with IDW's upcoming Star Trek: The Next Generation: Terra Incognita.

It promises to be a return to the simplistic heroic roots of The Next Generation series, which should come as good news to fans who want a return to normalcy following the experiment of the last run.

Despite the success of their previous comics, which focused on a villainous “mirror” version of the crew, this new six-issue miniseries marks a return to self-contained stories. The characters will find themselves on brand new adventures, experiencing unfamiliar situations. It's a format that echoes the singular episodes of the television series.

In Development: Lost Scenes

Have you seen every episode of Star Trek: The Original Series so many times that you know them inside out? Do you wish you could experience new thrills from the iconic series that started it all? If that’s the case then Star Trek: Lost Scenes, due out in August from Titan Books, is for you.

In an ideal world, we’d discover lost episodes of the show, but this is just as good.

Written by David Tilotta and Curt McAloney, and containing hundreds of exclusive color photos, the book chronicles the making of the episodes and our authors will reassemble deleted scenes that didn’t make the final cut -- from the very first pilot to the last ever episode.

Possible: The Next Generation Reboot

You’ve probably heard the news that Sir Patrick Stewart has allegedly been in talks to return to the Star Trek universe. Whether that’s going to be a role in the new Discovery series or something else entirely remains to be seen, but some are speculating that a reboot of The Next Generation could be in the works.

According to a THR article, CBS TV Studios is considering a reboot starring Stewart in which he would reprise his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

According to the article, Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman are both attached, though nothing has been set in stone yet. Please just give us more Picard, in any capacity.

In Development: To Lose the Earth Novel

Star Trek Episodes Mirror Voyager

Just because the final episode of Voyager aired in 2001 doesn’t mean the adventures of the crew ended. While novels and short stories were released alongside the TV series during its original run, author Kirsten Beyer has ensured Janeway and co. remain a part of franchise canon.

Since 2003, there 13 novels have been released, the latest of which is set to arrive later this year.

Little is known about To Lose the Earth at the moment, though it will be published by Pocket Books. In the meantime, Beyer is also working on the next series of Discovery as a writer. This is someone who’s contributed a lot to Star Trek lore, and we’re sure her next book will be another welcome addition to the universe.

In Development: In the Heart of Chaos

Released in 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, the Prometheus series was the first German-language-original Star Trek novels to be produced by the publisher Cross Cult.

The series takes place after the events in Pocket Books' The Fall series. Fortunately for English-speaking readers, too, they have also been translated for our reading pleasure and the next one is out later this year.

Penned by Christian Humberg and Bernd Perplies, the third entry in the series sees The Federation out to put a stop to a group of bad guys who have been carrying attacks. Should The Federation not find and stop the culprits’ dastardly plans, it could mean galactic warfare, and no one wants that.

Possible: The Worf Chronicles TV Series

Captain Worf Star Trek

It’s been a minute since we last heard any news of developments this series, following the initial announcement back in 2015, though it hasn’t officially been ruled out either.

Until last year the prospect of this one seemed slim, but now that CBS is expanding the universe and looking for new Star Trek projects to unleash, maybe it will be resurrected? If there’s a will there is a way after all.

Developed by Trek legend Michael Dorf, the story is said to revolve around Worf and his exploits as a commander in the Klingon Empire.

The show will focus on the Klingons' struggle to hold on to their traditional ways while also making progress as a society trying to integrate with the Federation.

In Development: The Autobiography of Mr. Spock

The Autobiography of Mr. Spock, also known as The Life of a Federation Legend, is a forthcoming reference book from Titan Books.

Written by David A. Goodman, and scheduled to be released in June 2019, the book is a fictional biography of everyone’s favorite Vulcan.

The story is an account of the life of Spock, through the highs and lows.

From his childhood on his native planet to his enrollment at Starfleet Academy, and his subsequent adventures with Captain Kirk and the Starship Enterprise. The story also chronicles his career triumphs, as well as his resurrection.

To cap it off, we will be introduced to people he's loved, and how they influenced his storied life.

In Development: What We Left Behind

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine first aired in January, 1993 and marked a change in direction for the franchise. When compared to previous Trek TV incarnations, Deep Space Nine boasted much edgier and darker content. Still, the show was still a success and has garnered more than its fair share of appreciators over time.

What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is an upcoming documentary that will take a detailed look at the series and examine the reasons why it went from a franchise outcast to a beloved mainstay.

On top of that, the show’s writers will also tell us more about what could have happened if an eighth series went ahead.

Rumored: New Animated Series

The original Star Trek: The Animated Series aired from 1973 until 1974 and focused on the further adventures of the Enterprise crew from the original live-action series. It was the only continuation of the original crew’s adventures until 1979’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Despite being short-lived, the show is a cult favorite that ended too soon. Fortunately, though, there could be further animated adventures in the near future if CBS has anything to do with it.

A new animated saga is rumored to be a part of CBS’ plan to expand the Star Trek universe on the small screen.

Details are being kept under wraps for now, but should it happen, it will be a refreshing alternative to the live-action fare that’s also planned.

In Development: New Obsessed with Star Trek

Data dresed as Watson in Star Trek

If you consider yourself an expert when it comes to the Star Trek franchise and want to test your knowledge then the Obsessed with Star Trek series are the books for you.

In addition to providing rare nuggets of information about the popular sci-fi franchise, the books boast plenty of quizzes about the TV shows and films, They’re perfect entertainment whether you want to challenge yourself or compete against a friend who also likes to boldly go where no person has gone before.

The next installment in Chip Carter’s series, which is scheduled for release this October by Chronicle Books, is an updated version of a previous addition with an extra 200 questions. Be sure to check it out.

Rumored: Limited TV Series

Alex Kurtzman wants to expand the Star Trek universe. When he was appointed to shepherd projects by CBS earlier this year, he came with a five-year plan that will see a host of shows make their way to the small screen in the near future.

It’s too early to say what all of these will entail and if everything will even happen as planned, but one of the projects that rumored to be in development is a limited TV series.

Other announced projects give us a little more information to work with, but this supposed limited series is being kept under wraps for now. The mystery is exciting in its own way, but until we hear more news we have no idea what to expect here.

In Development: Star Trek: A Cultural History

Nichelle Nichols as Lieutenant Uhura in Star Trek

Star Trek’s influence extends way beyond the screen and other mediums of entertainment. Not only was the show quite progressive for its time, but it also tapped into and commented on real life hot-button social and political issues such as war, the advancement of technology, race, and gender.

Star Trek became more than just a television show about space.

In his new book Star Trek: A Cultural History, M. Keith Booker examines the series from its original run to its subsequent impact on society and its place within the context of American history and pop culture as we know it.

Additionally, Booker also looks at the ways in which the series engaged with the aforementioned issues and how the show shone a spotlight them on them in its own unique way.

Rumored: Nicholas Meyer Trilogy

Nicholas Meyer

The name Nicholas Meyer is popular among Trekkies so the idea of him directing more films in the universe is a fascinating one. It may very well be on the horizon if CBS and Paramount can reach an agreement.

While talking as part of a panel (via Trekcore), Mayer explained that he was brought on board to write a brand new trilogy of movies. "I was hired to write a stand-alone Star Trek-related trilogy, [details of which] I can’t discus," Meyer told the audience during a recent "Shakespeare and Star Trek" panel discussion at UC Irvine. "I was writing it for CBS [All] Access… but at the moment CBS is at a war with Paramount/Viacom [about merging]."

For now, the project is on hold.

In Development: Looney Labs Card Games

Maybe watching Star Trek and reading about it isn’t enough for you. Maybe your idea of the perfect galactic adventure is a more participatory one. If that’s the case, then you can look forward to some new card games that are set to be released this August.

Up first is Star Trek Fluxx, a groovy new card game from Looney Labs and Gale Force Nine.

The game can be played between 2-6 players and is based on Star Trek: The Original Series.

If you’re more of a TNG type of person, fear not: there will also be a Next Generation variant of the card game released alongside its Original Series-based counterpart. Or you could always get both and live life to the fullest. You deserve it.
