A new clip from the upcoming premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy reveals Captain Janeway's introduction to the show's cast of alien youngsters. Prodigy is hardly the first time the Star Trek franchise has dipped into animation, but it will be the first time it has reached out to younger audiences. Set to premiere on Paramount+ later this month before airing on Nickelodeon, Star Trek: Prodigy is a new series set within the familiar Prime universe while focusing on unfamiliar characters. It's already been greenlit for a second season.

Star Trek: Prodigy centers on a group of alien kids who, while on the run, stumble upon an abandoned Starfleet ship. Eager to use the ship to travel to the Alpha Quadrant, the kids set off on a thrilling adventure across the galaxy. They're aided in their travels by Star Trek: Voyager's Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), who comes to them as their new home's A.I. system. In promoting Prodigy, Paramount+ has eagerly put much of the focus on Janeway's return, as evidenced by this new clip from the series.

On Sunday, Paramount+ unveiled the first clip from Star Trek: Prodigy. The minute-long video reveals the kids' first introduction to Janeway, which doesn't go quite as smoothly as they might've hoped. After all, Janeway was programmed to assist Starfleet officers, and these outcasts are far from that. Check out the clip down below.

As the Star Trek: Prodigy clip reveals, Janeway is initially under the impression that the kids are members of Starfleet. It doesn't take her long to realize something is amiss, and it seems likely that the minutes following the clip will have her discovering the truth. It's also clear that, at least near the beginning of Star Trek: Prodigy, there will be some conflict within the group. Gwyn (voiced by Ella Purnell) tries to establish herself immediately as the captain, but as she's tied down to the captain's chair and immediately is discredited by Dal (Brett Gray), it looks like her attempt at taking charge wasn't met with positive reactions.

This Star Trek: Prodigy clip sets up a lot of interesting elements, from Janeway's relationship with the group to the internal issues between them. It only offers a taste of what the rest of the series will provide once it premieres in just a couple of weeks. The hook for Star Trek: Prodigy might be Janeway herself, but the kids so far look like they'll be solid additions to the franchise. Fans can discover more about this new Trek series soon.
