In celebration of First Contact Day, Star Trek: Prodigy revealed the first look at Kate Mulgrew's return as fan favorite character, Captain Kathryn Janeway. The actress will provide the voice for her Star Trek character who will appear in the Prodigy crew as the Starship's built-in emergency training hologram. The animated show, which will be geared towards a younger audience, will follow the story of six young outcasts who don't understand the ship they have commandeered. Working together, they navigate the galaxy and are introduced the ideals of Starfleet.

Mulgrew's return to the fan favorite character in Star Trek: Prodigy is the latest in Paramount's ongoing strategy of expanding the Star Trek universe on their streaming platform. This is the first time the actress has played the role of Captain Janeway since briefly appearing as the character in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis. She started her run as Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager, which ran for seven seasons from 1995 to 2001Janeway is the first female captain to rise through Starfleet's ranks.

Paramount+ released the first images of Janeway and the Star Trek: Prodigy crew on First Contact Day, giving audiences a glimpse of what the cartoon version of her character will look like once the series premieres. It's worth noting that Janeway will not be the ship's captain, this time around, but will serve as an educational hologram that will help teach the crew. Check out the image below:

The Star Trek story universe has always promoted progressive ideals, and it sounds like Star Trek: Prodigy will be continuing the modus operandi that was created by Gene Roddenberry all those decades ago. As Paramount is expanding the reach and appeal of these stories, with the focus of exploring different facets of the genre, new audiences have responded positively. Adding a family-friendly educational component to the mix is surely a smart move for the streamer.

Mulgrew's return to Star Trek: Prodigy brings some epic value to a property that will surely appeal to young newcomers and die-hard adult fans alike. The streamer's continuing effort of bringing fan favorites back to this iconic sci-fi realm, like Q's return to Picard in season 2, doesn't just pack on the nostalgic excitement, it opens up these stories to go where no one has gone before. At least, that's definitely the hope.

Star Trek: Prodigy is set to premiere later this year on Paramount+.
