Star Trek: Prodigy unveiled its full cast and the animated series' alien species have fascinating deep cut references to Star Trek: The Original Series canon. Created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, the CGI-animated Star Trek: Prodigy is a joint venture between Nickelodeon Animation Studios and CBS Studios. Prodigy's prime directive is to bring a new, young audience to discover Star Trek, but even though it's aimed at kids, Prodigy is drawing from established Star Trek canon to satisfy Trekkers of every generation.

Star Trek: Prodigy is set in 2383 in the Delta Quadrant, which is five years after the USS Voyager returned to Earth from the Delta Quadrant in Star Trek: Voyager. Star Trek: Prodigy's premise involves a group of adolescents who find a derelict Federation starship. As they learn to operate their new vessel, they are aided by Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), who takes the form of the ship's Emergency Holographic Training program. With Captain Janeway showing the kids the ropes while simultaneously instilling Starfleet's ideals, Star Trek: Prodigy's young and eclectic cast will warp into new adventures in the final frontier as they search for a better future.

Star Trek: Prodigy is full of precedents for the venerable franchise. Not only is it the first Star Trek series to be about younger characters, but with the exception of the holographic Janeway, Prodigy is also the first show to feature an all-alien cast. But while Prodigy is introducing new species to Star Trek lore, there are also some familiar aliens drawn from TOS. Here's the cast of Star Trek: Prodigy and how they fit into canon.

Jankom Pog - Voiced by Jason Mantzoukas, Jankom Pog is a 16-year-old Tellarite. One of the classic Star Trek aliens introduced in the TOS episode "Journey to Babel," the pig-nosed Tellarites are argumentative and headstrong, but they are also one of the species that helped found the United Federation of Planets. Jankom is described as someone who relishes an argument but will play devil's advocate to hear all sides.

Zero - Voiced by Angus Imrie, Zero is a Medusan, a species introduced in the TOS episode "Is There No Truth in Beauty?" Medusans are noncorporeal, genderless, energy-based lifeforms and the sight of a Medusan without their containment suits can drive someone insane. In TOS, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) famously wore a red visor and was mentally damaged by the Medusan when he lost his eyewear. However, Medusans are some of the galaxy's best astrogators.

Rok-Tahk - Voiced by Rylee Alazraqui, Rok-Tahk is an unusually bright eight-year-old female Brikar, which is a rock-like species. The Brikar first appeared in the YA Star Trek expanded universe novel Worf's First Adventure, and their inclusion in Star Trek: Prodigy makes the Brikar race official canon. Rok-Tahk is described as a bit shy but a lover of animals.

Gwyn - Voiced by Ella Purnell, Gwyn is a 17-year-old Vau N'Akat, a species that's new to Star Trek. Gwyn was raised on her father's bleak mining planet and grew up dreaming of exploring the stars.

Dal- Voiced by Brett Gray, Dal is another new, unidentified species. Dal is 17 years old and fancies himself a maverick who holds strong to his unwavering hope, even in the toughest of times, which makes Dal sound like ideal Starfleet material.

Murf - Voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, Murf is described as an endearing and indestructible blob with curiously good timing and an appetite for ship parts. As a formless, fluid-like species, Murf may be a shapeshifter and possibly of the same race as Odo (Rene Auberjonois) and the Founders on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Captain Kathryn Janeway - Voiced by Kate Mulgrew, Captain Janeway is one of Starfleet's legendary commanders who brought her ship, the USS Voyager, back home after being lost for seven years in the Delta Quadrant. As seen in Star Trek: Nemesis (set 4 years before Prodigy), the actual Kathryn Janeway is now an Admiral but Star Trek: Prodigy's hologram restores her to the rank of Captain as Janeway teaches her young charges all about the idealism of Starfleet and the Federation.
