Star Trek: Picard showrunner Akiva Goldsman teases the possibility of further TNG cameos. Star Trek: Picard saw the return of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s leading character, and captain of the USS Enterprise, Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Season 1 saw Picard team up with new characters, and reunite with some old ones, as he fought to figure out a mystery left behind by Data.

The upcoming Star Trek: Picard season 2 will see the return of John de Lancie’s Q, who appears to be the season’s primary antagonist. Alongside de Lancie in returning to Star Trek will be Whoopi Goldeberg. The Academy Award winning actor starred in TNG as Guinan, the USS Enterprise’s bartender, advice-giver, and close friend and confidant of Captain Picard. While trailers for Picard season 2 have shown a vague outline of the plot, which will focus on the character’s being transported to an alternate reality, what’s unclear is Q’s motivations (which were often benign throughout TNG), and how exactly Guinan will become involved.

Now, in an interview with SFX magazine (via TrekMovie.com), Goldsman has revealed that there could be more TNG cameos in the show’s future. The showrunner said that “those [cameos] that you know are coming will not be the last.” Goldsman named no names, but fins will begin to speculate nevertheless. Read Goldsman’s full quote below:

“[B]y the time these three years [of Star Trek: Picard] are done, those [cameos] that you know are coming will not be the last.”

Star Trek: Picard Showrunner Teases More TNG Cameos

Following Goldsman’s reveal, viewers will undoubtedly begin guessing which actor’s could be returning to the screen. Previous cameos have come from Brent Spiner as Data, Jonathan Del Arco as Hugh, and Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis as William Riker and Deanna Troi respectively. Of the main cast of TNG, only Michael Dorn, Levar Burton, and Gates McFadden are yet to appear on screen. Whether or not fans will get to see all three in Star Trek: Picard season 2 remains to be seen, but with Picard season 3 confirmed there’s still plenty of time.

Whether or not actors from other Star Trek series will have a role in Star Trek: Picard is also unclear. Seven of Nine, played by Jerri Ryan, is a part of the show’s main cast despite not being on TNG. Seven of Nine became an integral part of Star Trek: Voyager, and there are plenty of other character’s from the series who could show up in Star Trek: Picard. Kate Mulgrew’s Kathryn Janeway is surely first among them, as she is currently voicing the character on the animated Star Trek: Prodigy. There is also plenty of opportunity for characters from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to appear on the show, and Star Trek: Picard could take on the bold narrative choice of wrapping up Captain Sisko’s storyline. With the sheer size of the Star Trek universe, there are plenty of directions that the next two series of the show could play out and ultimately, fans will have to wait and see before they find out.
