First Look At Star Trek: Picard’s New 24th Century Starfleet Uniform

New images from an English Star Trek convention give a first look at Patrick Stewart's 24th Century admiral's uniform in Star Trek: Picard.

New convention images offer a first look at Patrick Stewart’s 24th Century admiral’s uniform in Star Trek: Picard. Stewart’s return to his most famous role comes nearly twenty years after he last played the character in the film Star Trek: Nemesis opposite Tom Hardy. Picard of course first appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation, the series that put Trek back on the TV map in the 1980s, and quickly established himself as a captain to rival the great James T. Kirk himself.

Over ten years after Star Trek: Enterprise left the airwaves, the latest Trek small screen revival kicked off on the streaming service CBS All Access with Star Trek: Discovery, an action-heavy series set before the events of Star Trek: TOS. After the success of Discovery, All Access soon moved ahead with a whole slate of Trek-related content, including Picard. Set twenty years after TNG, Picard sees the famed starship captain retired from Starfleet and living on his family vineyard with his faithful dog Number One. But Picard’s tranquil new life doesn't last long, as he soon finds himself returning to space to deal with a threat from his past.

Fans have already received several glimpses of what Picard has in store, including some nostalgic trailers, and now they’re getting a closer look at Picard’s new uniform thanks to some pictures coming out of the Destination Star Trek convention in Birmingham, England (via Trekcore). The 24th Century uniform, which Picard received when being promoted to admiral years before the events of the new series, was designed by Christine Clark and clearly adheres to the uniform look first established in TNG. That CBS All Access is revisiting Picard at all clearly shows they are not above tapping into nostalgia in their efforts to capitalize on the Star Trek brand, and the new uniform further reinforces the idea that in many ways Picard will stick with the familiar. In addition to classic-looking uniforms, the show will also feature classic characters like Star Trek: Voyager’s Seven of Nine, and Picard’s old shipmates Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Troi (Marina Sirtis). But there will also be new characters in keeping with the youth movement of Discovery, as the show attempts to bridge the gap between classic Trek and the updated version.

It remains to be seen if Star Trek: Picard will indeed succeed in its mission to satisfy old school Trek fanatics and newer converts alike, but it’s already well ahead of the game just by bringing back Stewart’s beloved character. Of course, it all comes down to the story offered by the series, and whether that story proves to be compelling in the way all the classic Trek stories are. Fans love obsessing over details like uniforms and tech of course, but ultimately, it’s the human factor that sets Trek apart.
