Star Trek: Picard fan favorite Seven of Nine may be moving on to a role in Starfleet aboard the USS Titan-A for the show's final season, but that doesn't mean it's the end of the road for her former ship, La Sirena. A surprisingly tough little cargo ship, La Sirena was introduced in Star Trek: Picard season 1, at that point captained by former Starfleet officer Cristobal Rios. Part of Picard's efforts to eschew as many Star Trek tropes as possible in its first season, La Sirena has the distinction of being the first primary ship on a Star Trek show to have no affiliation with Starfleet.

Rios rejoined Starfleet in Picard season 2, passing La Siren to Seven of Nine. However, Seven was given a Starfleet field commission, and it's been confirmed via trailers and the show's creators that Seven is the first officer of the USS Titan-A at the start of season 3. But that's not the end of the road for La Sirena; the show's New York Comic Con Picard trailer features footage of both Raffi Musiker and the returning Klingon warrior Worf aboard the freighter. While it may no longer be the show's primary ship, La Sirena's story isn't over yet, as it may well have been handed over to Raffi by Seven.

Why Picard Used La Sirena Instead Of A Starfleet Ship

There are both real world and in-story reasons why Admiral Jean-Luc Picard chose La Sirena over a traditional Starfleet vessel to track down Soji, the late Lieutenant Commander Data's synthetic daughter. Within the story of Star Trek: Picard season 1, Jean-Luc is flatly denied reinstatement in Starfleet by Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy, who believes him to be a delusional old man on a wild goose chase. Picard is eventually forced to hire Rios, assembling a ragtag crew along the way.

In reality, Picard star Patrick Stewart was adamant that the show's first season avoid the same thematic beats he had explored so thoroughly over seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and four subsequent films. There would be no uniforms, no direct Starfleet involvement, and Picard wouldn't even necessarily be in charge anymore. This resulted in a polarizing first season, largely unlike any Star Trek that had come before. Despite the mixed response, La Sirena served its purpose well, reinforcing the idea that Picard and his new crew were severe underdogs.

Why Picard Season 3 Uses The Titan-A Instead Of La Sirena

In many ways, Star Trek: Picard season 3 is going to be a radically different show than the first two seasons. New showrunner Terry Matalas convinced Stewart and the show's other producers that the final season should be a swan song for the entire TNG cast, so many of those old Starfleet tropes will be returning, including the show's new primary setting, the Titan-A, a much more traditional Starfleet vessel. Matalas has spoken of the final season being decidedly larger in scale and scope than the first two, so shoving the entire cast of TNG onto a tiny freighter was probably never a practical option.

It's unclear exactly what role La Sirena will play in the final season of Star Trek: Picard. While there's been no confirmation, it would make sense for Seven to have passed the ship onto Raffi, her romantic partner and trusted confidante in season 2. From the brief glimpses of her in the Picard season 3 trailers, Raffi seems to be on a separate mission from the majority of the crew, as she's not seen on the Titan-A. Wherever La Sirena may eventually end up, it's a worthy, if unorthodox, entry into the pantheon of Star Trek ships.
