UPDATE: The set photo has been removed at the request of CBS. The article below has otherwise been left as it was originally published.

A set photo from Star Trek: Picard gives fans their first look at the latest iteration of the Starfleet uniform. Picard takes place at the tail end of the 24th century - about twenty years after Star Trek: Nemesis - which to date is the farthest into the future a Star Trek series has ever been set.

Sir Patrick Stewart stunned a Las Vegas convention crowd in August 2018 when he announced he'd be returning to the iconic role of Jean-Luc Picard for a new series on CBS All Access. The series will follow an older Picard who leads a much different life than the last time we saw him - he's no longer captain of the Enterprise, and he's been deeply affected by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire following the destruction of Romulus in J.J. Abrams' first Star Trek movie in 2009.

Picard may not be a member of Starfleet anymore, but that doesn't mean we won't be seeing plenty of that organization, as well as the latest update to the ever-changing Starfleet uniform. Twitter user Scuttlecliff has posted a set photo revealing the look of the new uniforms, which can be seen below. The image has been removed at the request of CBS.

The uniforms strongly evoke the late 1990s uniforms worn by the crews of Deep Space Nine and Voyager, with a mostly black jumpsuit featuring colored shoulders and collars to designate which branch they serve in. While it's too small to see in the image, Scuttlecliff suggests the Starfleet badges are reminiscent of those featured in "All Good Things," the series finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation that partially took place 25 years in its relative future - which is the exact time period of the Picard series.

Unlike Star Trek: Discovery's uniforms, which bear essentially no aesthetic similarities to other Starfleet uniforms we've seen in that era (like Captain Christopher Pike's bright gold), the Picard uniforms strongly evoke the style of the 1990s era of Star Trek in which TNG and Picard bloomed. They're clearly making an effort to lure in viewers based on their nostalgia for that era of the franchise, arguably the height of Star Trek's popularity.

Much is still unknown about Star Trek: Picard. What exactly Picard has been up to the last two decades is yet to be revealed, and we don't know if any of his former Enterprise colleagues will accompany him onscreen - though former Commander Riker actor Jonathan Frakes will be on hand to direct two episodes. While the show is still largely a mystery, we're at least getting an idea of the look of the production, and leaning into the familiar Starfleet aesthetic is probably a smart decision.
