Star Trek: Picard season 3 was a huge success by reuniting the beloved cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation ostensibly for one final adventure, but could the show go on into season 4? Star Trek: Picard's first two seasons polarized audiences with a mostly new cast and stories that largely didn't involve Starfleet. But Picard season 3 was warmly and enthusiastically greeted as a return to form, unraveling an epic space story with deeply personal consequences for Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his friends from the USS Enterprise-D.

Perhaps the most celebrated aspect of Star Trek: Picard season 3 has been the return of the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Each actor proved to still be in fine form, especially Jonathan Frakes, who plays Captain Will Riker with a looser, funnier, more melancholy vibe than he did on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Star Trek: Picard season 3 was designed to be the final story for the crew of TNG, but since the season was so popular, is there a chance Jean-Luc and friends could come back for one last adventure?

Is Star Trek Making Picard Season 4?

Another season of Picard doesn't look likely

Despite Star Trek: Picard season 3's success, there are currently no plans to make season 4 of the series. Patrick Stewart and producers Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman had always intended Star Trek: Picard to run for 3 seasons. With the Picard season 3 finale echoing the much loved Star Trek: The Next Generation series finale "All Good Things" with a joyous poker game played by Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and friends from the USS Enterprise-D, it seems like Star Trek: Picard season 3 is indeed the end of the saga of Star Trek: The Next Generation as it was designed to be.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 showrunner and director Terry Matalas let the camera run during the filming of the poker game to capture the real-life camaraderie of the actors. The scene is a bonus feature on Star Trek: Picard season 3's Blu-ray.

Will Picard's Spinoff Star Trek: Legacy Happen?

Fans definitely want to continue Picard's story, and so do the actors and Picard's creative team

Star Trek: Picard season 3's finale, "The Last Generation," also sets up producer Terry Matalas' proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy, with Seven Of Nine (Jeri Ryan) becoming the Captain of the newly rechristened USS Enterprise-G and Jean-Luc Picard's son, Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) meeting Q (John de Lancie). The entirety of Star Trek: The Next Generation's cast - Patrick Stewart included - have suggested they would be happy to recur or guest star in Star Trek: Legacy, and the rest of Star Trek: Picard season 3's actors would also commit to a spinoff. But despite a dedicated fan campaign online, there are no plans from Paramount+ to develop Star Trek: Legacy. As time passes, the possibility of Star Trek: Legacy becomes more daunting due to the actors and creative team's busy schedules.

Paramount+ is committed to a new TV series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and a made-for-streaming movie, Star Trek: Section 31 starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh.

One of the pleasant surprises from the Star Trek: Picard season 3 finale "The Last Generation" was that the entire Star Trek: The Next Generation cast survived. They also all end up in positions where it would be very easy for them to return for a potential Picard season 4 or a new Star Trek: Legacy series. Jonathan Frakes has expressed his desire to not only return as Riker, but also help develop any potential new Star Trek series. It also seems like a no-brainer that Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) might pop in occasionally to visit his daughter, Lieutenant Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) aboard the USS Enterprise-G.

Will There Be A Star Trek: Picard Movie?

Patrick Stewart hopes to make it so.

Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard in the finale of Star Trek: Picard

Patrick Stewart has been vocal about wanting "one more" movie concluding Star Trek: Picard. As Sir Patrick wrote in his autobiography, "Making It So: A Memoir," and repeated in several interviews, Stewart wants one final film to wrap up Jean-Luc Picard's story. Sir Patrick also wants Jonathan Frakes to direct, and he has spoken to Brent Spiner about appearing in the film. Despite Stewart's enthusiasm, and conflicting reports that Stewart received a Picard movie script, however, there seems to be little or no interest from Paramount to make a Star Trek: Picard movie.

When Star Trek: Picard Season 4 Or Star Trek: Legacy Could Release If It Happens

It could be years before the USS Enterprise-G flies again.

Picard Finale Riker Worf

If a Star Trek: Picard season 4 or Star Trek: Legacy were to happen, it would likely be many years away. Paramount is in the midst of an upheaval with the studio reportedly for sale and belt-tightening happening in the streaming business. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is definite, and the young adult-focused Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series is due to go into production in 2024, as well as Michelle Yeoh's Star Trek: Section 31 movie. Due to the realities of production schedules and Paramount's newly revised release strategy concentrating on event films and miniseries, it seems neither Star Trek: Picard season 4 or a debut season of Star Trek: Legacy would premiere earlier than 2025 or 2026 if it happens at all.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Swept The Saturn Awards

Picard won big in the major TV categories

Picard Cast Saturn Awards

Star Trek: Picard season 3 was disappointingly snubbed by the Emmys, but the final season received its flowers at the 51st annual Saturn Awards. Picard season 3 swept the Saturns' major TV categories, winning Best Science Fiction Series, as Patrick Stewart won Best Actor in a TV Series, Jonathan Frakes won Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series, Jeri Ryan won Best Supporting Actress in a TV series, and the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation received a Lifetime Achievement Award. It was overdue recognition that was well-deserved for Star Trek: Picard season 3, although it may also be the last hurrah for the series unless Star Trek: Picard season 4 or Star Trek: Legacy is greenlit.
