Paramount+ has unveiled a new Star Trek: Picard season 2 trailer that sees Patrick Stewart and his crew face off against the time-manipulating Q. Created by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kristin Beyer and Alex Kurtzman, the series is set 20 years after the events of the titular hero's prior appearance, Star Trek: Nemesis, as he is affected by the death of Data and the destruction of the planet Romulus seen in 2009's Star Trek film. The first chapter in Kurtzman's expanded universe was a smash hit, receiving rave reviews from critics and garnering five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and one win.

Thanks to the positive fan reception to the series even prior to its debut and Stewart confirming the desire and plan for it to continue, the formerly-branded CBS All Access officially renewed the series for season 2 ahead of its premiere. Following multiple delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, filming finally got underway on both seasons 2 and 3 of Picard with Stewart's former Next Generation co-star and frequent Star Trek helmer Jonathan Frakes returning to direct episodes of season 2. Though it hasn't officially been announced as wrapping filming, Paramount+ is building the hype for Picard's return.

While production continues on season 3 of the series, Paramount+ has revealed a new Picard season 2 trailer. In addition to confirming its 2022 return, the footage sees the return of John de Lancie's omnipotent Q and the time-bending consequences with their return. Check out the new teaser below:

Given the writers have been pretty tight-lipped about what fans can expect from the next season of Picard aside from its time-traveling nature, it's exciting to get to see a better look at what Stewart and his crew will face. One of the biggest teases fans are sure to go wild for is the return of de Lancie's Q in what appears to be a more villainous nature, with a declaration of arriving to "the very end of the road not taken," which also confirms the timeline-breaking nature of the story for season 2. While his attire in his brief trailer appearance may not have the same flair as his appearances in TNG, Q's arrival is nonetheless a call to celebrate for those who have been with every iteration of the Star Trek franchise.

The other major takeaway from the Star Trek: Picard season 2 trailer is the new design for Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine, no longer adorned with the Borg implant above her left eye as she is best known for. Given the time-twisting nature of the season it doesn't come as a major surprise to see some characters have their appearances totally changed for narrative purposes, but the trailer's indication that Seven is similarly confused by the new look does raise some interesting questions about the situation. Only time will tell what Star Trek: Picard season 2 has in store when it arrives on Paramount+ in 2022.
