Star Trek: Picard season 2 will explore how Jean-Luc (Patrick Stewart) feels about his new android body. Fans were delighted when they heard Stewart would once again return to the franchise in a brand new series for CBS All Access, and for the most part, season 1 of Picard seemed to deliver on their hopes. Picard debuted back in January and ran through March, but even before it premiered, it had been renewed for a second season. This didn't come as much of a surprise, since CBS All Access' Star Trek shows have so far flourished on the streaming service.

The season 1 finale of Picard, "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2", came with a twist that has major implications for the sci-fi series going forward. All throughout the season, Picard grappled with a terminal illness that finally caught up to him in that final episode. Picard died, but soon had his consciousness uploaded to an artificial body known as a golem. Therefore, Picard will be able to live on, but he's no longer human. After the finale, Stewart spoke about how surprised he was by the twist, especially since he didn't actually expect Picard to die.

Picard season 2 will see the beloved captain adjust to his new normal, which comes from his android body. While speaking to Gold Derby about the series, Stewart said, "We shall see. We don’t know how Picard is going to live with this new condition that has become part of his life." Right now, season 2 is still in the writing stage, so while Stewart didn't have much else to tease, he was able to add, "We’re not going to be covering the same ground, and it’s going to be extraordinary… I’m looking forward to it very much."

Turning Picard into an android was quite the twist, and one that could really shake up the show. It's safe to say Star Trek fans already know Picard really well thanks to his time on The Next Generation and in various movies. Now, however, they get the chance to really see him in a way they haven't before. This long-term issue is something he's never dealt with, and Picard can really dig into how he feels about his new situation.

Exactly when fans can expect season 2 of Picard is unclear. Seeing as the scripts are still being written, production likely wouldn't begin until later this year. Even beyond that, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic can further affect filming if it continues for much longer. Still, things seem to be on track for now. Plus, Star Trek fans won't be without content, as season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery is still on the way, and a new series titled Strange New Worlds is in development. It might just be a while before fans catch up with android Picard.
