The Star Trek: Picard NYCC trailer has confirmed the show's premiere date. Following the success of Star Trek: Discovery, CBS All Access is moving forward with a Star Trek TV show that sees Patrick Stewart reprise his much-beloved role as Jean-Luc Picard for the first time since the 2002 movie, Star Trek: Nemesis. Picard the series will pick up twenty years after Nemesis, with its namesake now retired from Starfleet and living on his family's vineyard in La Barre, France. It's the same place where Jean-Luc grew up, as seen in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Family".

Speaking of The Next Generation, Picard will serve as a partial continuation of that show, with Brent Spiner returning in some form as Data (who sacrificed himself in Nemesis), and Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis reprising their roles as Picard's former crew members William Riker and Deanna Troi. At the same time, Picard will carry over elements from Star Trek: Voyager, with Jeri Ryan once again playing the former Borg Seven of Nine on this new series. Fittingly, all four of these characters make an appearance in the latest Picard preview.

In addition to dropping the new trailer at Star Trek: Picard's New York Comic Con panel today, CBS All Access has confirmed the show will premiere next year on Thursday, January 23. You can check out the NYCC promo below.

For many, the highlight of this trailer will be the glimpse of Picard reuniting with Riker and Troi. Nemesis ended with the lovebirds having finally tied the knot and Riker setting off to command the USS Titan as its captain, but it appears the pair has since settled down and started a family of their own. Picard, on the other hand, stepped away from Starfleet after a rescue effort to save the Romulan people (following Romulus' destruction, as depicted in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek) forced him to make a terrible sacrifice, shattering his faith in the Federation. As a result, Picard will have to operate without Starfleet in his corner when he sets out on an urgent mission in this new series.

The NYCC trailer also features appearances by some of the new characters in Star Trek: Picard, like Dr. Agnes Jurat (Allison Pill) and Santiago Cabrera as Cristobal Rios, Picard's ship pilot. Other key players on the show include Evan Evagora as Elnor - a Romulan fighter and refugee who's highly loyal to Picard - and Harry Treadaway as Narek, another Romulan who assists Picard when it comes to light that his people are experimenting on former Borg. Overall, Star Trek: Picard so far seems like a promising blend of nostalgia for the franchise's past and thoughtful, politically-savvy storytelling in the same vein as The Next Generation (and most everything else Star Trek-related).
