What Does Picard's Streaming Success Mean For Star Trek: Legacy?

13_startreklegacy_stories

Star Trek: Picard's success would logically lead to audiences assuming that showrunner Terry Matalas' planned spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy, is a sure bet, but thus far, a green light has not been automatic. Several factors are impeding Star Trek: Legacy from going into production, including the Writers' Guild of America (WGA) currently being on strike to fight for better terms for its member. Further, changes in the overall streaming business led to Paramount+ adjusting its own slate. With the made-for-streaming movie Star Trek: Section 31 starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh and a new Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series announced, Star Trek: Legacy may have a long wait before the USS Enterprise-G warps back into action.

Although these are uncertain times for the overall entertainment industry, which obviously affects the Star Trek franchise, there's no arguing that Star Trek: Picard concluded as a big win for Paramount+ and for the creative team involved. Paramount+ plans to continue its momentum into the summer with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, which premieres on the streamer on June 15, with the hit animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy providing Trek content for the remainder of 2023. Fingers are crossed that Strange New Worlds can match the Nielsen streaming success that Star Trek: Picard season 3 has enjoyed.
