From now on, March 26 will be known as Leonard Nimoy Day in Boston, Massachusetts, as the city honors the late Star Trek actor. Nimoy first got his acting start in 1951 and, throughout the 50s and 60s, racked up an impressive amount of television credits before taking on the role that would make him a cultural icon. With Star Trek, Nimoy brought half-human, half-Vulcan Spock to life and turned him into one of the most well-known sci-fi characters of all time. Nimoy played Spock across multiple Star Trek shows and movies, including the recent reboot films that saw Zachary Quinto take on the role of the younger Spock.

Beyond Star Trek, Nimoy lent his voice to several notable projects over the years, including Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. He also was a prolific director, helming two Star Trek movies and others outside of the franchise, like Three Men and a Baby. Nimoy sadly passed away in 2015 at the age of 83, and the years since have been spent remembering his legacy. His final onscreen appearance came in 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness, and the 2016 sequel Star Trek Beyond paid tribute to him. Additionally, his children have made documentaries in his honor, For the Love of Spock and Remembering Leonard Nimoy.

Now there is another way Nimoy's memory gets to live on. Nimoy's daughter, Julie Nimoy, took to social media last week to reveal the city of Boston has declared March 26, the late actor's birthday, to be Leonard Nimoy Day. The official proclamation mentions several of Nimoy's achievements, including his honorary degree from Boston University. "Leonard Nimoy, through his fictional character, Mr. Spock - half human, half Vulcan - gave the immigrant, the refugee, and the oppressed, a hero for 'the Outsider'," the proclamation reads. Boston mayor Marty Walsh signed off on it, and Julie Nimoy thanked him for supporting it.

Nimoy was born and raised in Boston, so this is the ultimate tribute for the actor. Even without Spock, Nimoy was an impressive presence in the entertainment industry, and his loss is still felt years later. It's clear his legacy will live on for a long time. The proclamation's special mention that, as Spock, he was a hero for "the Outsider," is a special touch; he served as an inspiration for so many who might not have had someone special to look up to. It's fitting that the first Leonard Nimoy Day will arrive on a Friday, since it's the perfect day to celebrate!

In what feels like further proof of both Nimoy and Spock's enduring legacy, the character is getting a new story in the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Ethan Peck will once again play the character, reprising his role from Star Trek: Discovery season 2. Nimoy contributed something very special to the world, and he will never be forgotten by those whose lives he touched.
