Should Star Trek: Legacy get the green light, it could pick up multiple loose threads from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to continue the stories of the titular space station and its crew. Aside from Star Trek: Lower Decks' visit to DS9 and the return of Captain Worf (Michael Dorn) in Star Trek: Picard season 3, the DS9 characters have so far been under-represented in Star Trek's 21st century renaissance. Picard season 3's Changeling plot laid the groundwork for further exploration of the aftermath of DS9's legacy, either in a movie, spinoff show, or in Matalas' dream project Star Trek: Legacy.

Terry Matalas has been open about his desire to continue the story of Star Trek: Picard's 25th century, and it would be an ideal way to revisit Deep Space Nine. Matalas promises that Star Trek: Legacy will continue the story of Star Trek's last generation and its next, by revisiting various beloved characters from the 90s Trek shows. The franchise has already explored the legacy of both the Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager crews, but there's still rich storytelling potential in revisiting stories from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

10 Did Sisko Ever Return From The Wormhole?

Jake Sisko and Benjamin Sisko in DS9

One of the biggest Star Trek: Deep Space Nine questions that Star Trek: Legacy can answer is what happened to Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) after he entered the Celestial Temple, promising to return to his family. As a figure of great significance to the history of Starfleet, the Dominion War, and the religious iconography of Bajor, Sisko would really need his own show to tackle the galactic implications of his return. However, Star Trek: Legacy could set up this spinoff show by sending the USS Enterprise-G to investigate Sisko's reappearance on Bajor or Deep Space Nine itself.

9 How Did Odo Change Star Trek: DS9's Changelings?

Although the actor René Auberjonois sadly passed away in 2019, Star Trek could still continue exploring the legacy of Constable Odo within the Great Link. Star Trek: Picard season 3 established that Odo and Worf were still in contact, with the former warning the Klingon about a rogue Changeling schism. The schism led by Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer) were separated from the Great Link, and had been radicalized by their torture at the hands of Section 31. In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine finale, Odo left to re-educate the Changelings about the solids, so it would be fascinating to return to the Great Link to explore how Odo's teachings have changed life in the Gamma Quadrant.

8 What Happened To Worf's Son Alexander In Star Trek?

Michael Dorn as Worf in Star Trek: Picard and Marc Worden as Alexander in Star Trek: DS9

Terry Matalas has promised that Alexander Rozhenko (Marc Worden), Worf's son will be in Star Trek: Legacy. Alexander's return would update the story of the young Klingon after his last appearance in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine when he was promoted to weapons officer aboard the Klingon battle cruiser, the IKS Ya'Vang. Worf didn't mention Alexander at all during Star Trek: Picard season 3, which was particularly odd given how many of his Enterprise colleagues' kids were featured. The lack of even a name-check for Alexander from Worf suggests some bad blood between father and son that could be explored in a future episode of Star Trek: Legacy.

7 What Happened To Cardassia After Star Trek: DS9's Dominion War?

Cardassia Prime

The liberation of Cardassia Prime marked the end of the Dominion War, and victory for the United Federation of Planets and their allies. The liberation of the planet came at a harrowing cost, however, leaving 800 million dead. How the Cardassians rebuilt after this loss has never been explored properly on screen. Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal), the 32nd century's half-Cardassian Federation President from Star Trek: Discovery, suggests that the Cardassians finally embraced a less militaristic and authoritarian regime, but it would be fascinating to see this societal transition play out on screen in Star Trek: Legacy.

6 How Did Chief O'Brien Become The Most Important Starfleet Officer In History?

Chief O Brien DS9

In the Star Trek: Lower Decks episode "Temporal Edict", a flash forward to the far future saw Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) revered as "perhaps the most important person in Starfleet history". O'Brien's skills with the transporter would have been hugely helpful during the Borg assimilation of Starfleet during Frontier Day. However, it was Admiral Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) who worked on the fix to remove the Borg DNA from Starfleet's transporter code. Star Trek: Legacy could give Chief O'Brien another chance to prove his importance to Starfleet, and Terry Matalas has already revealed via a Reddit AMA that he has "a plan" for the Chief.

5 Did Dr. Bashir Ever Bring Down Star Trek's Section 31?

Our man Bashir in DS9 Section 31

The secretive Starfleet black ops group Section 31 became an obsession for Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) in his final two seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He wasn't able to get the information that he desired, but it's unlikely that Bashir's fixation with Section 31 would have ended with the DS9 finale. As Star Trek: Lower Decks has established the organization is still in operation, Bashir could now be on their trail. Alternatively, as in the proposed Star Trek: DS9 season 8, Bashir could have risen up the ranks to become Section 31 Commander, with the intention of reforming the organization or burning it to the ground.

4 What Happened To Star Trek's Ferengi After DS9?

Star trek discovery ferengi officer sneed star trek picard

Star Trek: Picard season 3's Ferengi gangster Sneed (Aaron Stanford) and the return of Quark (Armin Shimerman) in Star Trek: Lower Decks proved the sweeping reforms brought in by Grand Nagus Rom (Max Grodénchik) haven't been adopted by everyone. A trip to Ferenginar in Star Trek: Legacy could reveal whether the Ferengi have lived up to the more progressive examples set by Rom and his son, Lt. Nog (Aron Eisenberg), or if they're still embracing a society that puts profit above all else. A widening cultural split and generational conflict on Ferenginar could be a fascinating story with real-world relevance for the politics of today.

3 What Does The Dominion Look Like In Star Trek's 25th Century?

The JemHadar And The Cardassians From Star Trek Deep Space Nine

Although the Dominion were forced to retreat from their occupied territory in the Alpha Quadrant, Starfleet didn't impose any restrictions on their hold over the Gamma Quadrant. It would be interesting, therefore, to see if those species who were loyal to the Changeling Founders still felt that same loyalty decades later. The Jem'Hadar and the Vorta built their whole culture around the Founders as gods, but each species resented the other. With the defeat of the Dominion in the Alpha Quadrant, the Vorta and Jem'Hadar may now be fighting a new Dominion War among themselves.

2 Star Trek: Legacy Can Explore Sisko's Next Generation

Jake Sisko Deep space nine USS Cerritos

The cast of Star Trek: Legacy will include the next generation of several Star Trek legends, and Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton) could join this cast. As a war reporter during the Dominion War, Jake could now be an award-winning journalist working for the Federation News Network which has previously featured in Star Trek: Lower Decks. The role of the press in Star Trek has never really been explored in great detail, and Jake's presence in Legacy could allow the show to tackle the timely issue of ethics in journalism and fake news through a sci-fi lens.

1 Star Trek: Legacy Can Answer If Bajor Ever Joined The Federation

Captain Benjamin Sisko against the backdrop of Bajor in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Bajor didn't join Star Trek's Federation as to do so during the Dominion War would have invited its destruction at the hands of the Cardassians. The Bajoran Emissary, Captain Sisko, said that he believed the Bajorans would one day join the Federation but, sadly, he never saw that day. As the USS Enterprise-G has a Bajoran tactical officer, Lt. Matthew Arliss Mura (Joseph Lee), he can be Star Trek: Legacy's way into exploring the position of Bajor in the 25th century. With Cardassia considerably weakened during the Dominion War, it's even possible that the two former enemies have begun making inroads toward a lasting peace.

With its overarching storylines, and morally complex storytelling, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was the Star Trek show that most resembles the prestige television of today. It's strange, but understandable, that the Star Trek franchise has been cautious about revisiting such an unimpeachable property. However, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine made such substantial changes to the history of the Star Trek universe that their consequences deserve to be explored further in Terry Matalas' proposed Star Trek: Legacy series.
