IDW Publishing has revitalized its line of Star Trek comics, launching a number of exciting new ongoing books and miniseries. The flagship title, called Star Trek, follows the adventures of Benjamin Sisko, recently returned from his sojourn with the Prophets. He has been sent back to discover the identity of who is killing the franchise’s god-like beings. To help with his mission, Starfleet has given him a new ship, the Theseus and a fantastic new crew composed of the best from across Trek’s various incarnations. In the previous issue, the Theseus and its crew were witness to genocide on a truly galactic scale; whoever is responsible for these killings slaughtered the Crystaline Entities, an impressive, if not horrifying, display that reinforced how dire a threat they are facing.

In Star Trek #2, Sisko’s journey is now taking him and the Theseus deep into the Klingon Empire. Sisko and his comrades are seeking the Engineers of Sardakesh, a mysterious race that possesses unbelievable technology powerful enough to capture rogue planets and transport them into a star’s orbit. But what is truly unique is that the Klingons are aware of Sardakesh’s power, but make no attempt to conquer and subjugate its people. A text piece reveals they tried once, and it did not end well for them. Now, the Klingons allow the reclusive Engineers to live untroubled in their space; in turn, the Engineers do not bother them. The issue is written by Jackson Lanzig and Collin Kelly, illustrated by Oleg Chudakov, colored by Lee Loughridge and lettered by Clayton Cowles.

The Klingons Fear No One—Except the Engineers

Star Trek Engineers Klingons

The Engineers of Sardakesh are the only race the Klingons have never been able to conquer. Fans are given tantalizing glimpses of the power the Engineers of Sardakesh possess, and it is clear that it is enough to hold the Klingons at bay, should they ever decide to attack. The Klingons are a violent and war-like race, one that lives for conquest and glory, and yet the Engineers live deep in their territory unbothered. The Engineers’ technology is no doubt alluring to the Klingons, but the Klingons learned their lesson when they tried to attack the first time. The Klingons are relentless in combat, only letting up when the battle is won, or they are dead, so the idea there is a race so powerful the Klingons leave them alone is intriguing. Living deep and unbothered in Klingon space greatly benefits the Engineers. They are mysterious and reclusive, with secret technology that is light years beyond anything the Federation or the Klingons can conceive. Such tech could be a tempting target for anyone, but by living deep in the war-like Klingons’ territory, the Engineers are giving themselves an extra layer of protection.

The Klingons are one of the most powerful races in the Star Trek universe, a violent species that thrives on battle and conquest. Klingons fear nothing–except the Engineers of Sardakesh, the one race they will never conquer.
