Sulu actor John Cho hopes to appear in Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek movie. Tarantino's take on Star Trek has entered early stages of development at Paramount after the director's pitch to the studio and J.J. Abrams. The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith has been selected to pen the script. Like all the director's films, Tarantino's Star Trek will carry an R rating.
A long-time Star Trek fan, Tarantino has expressed interest in tackling a Trek movie on multiple occasions over the years. In a podcast appearance several years ago, the director expressed a particular fondness for the Star Trek TOS episode "City on the Edge of Forever." Tarantino indicated that he'd like to take a classic Trek episode like that one and expand it into a feature film. However, we don't yet know if that is the actual plan for his Trek project. We also don't know whether Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana or any of the rest of the current Trek cast will be involved.
At least one member of the current Trek cast, Sulu actor John Cho, said he indeed hopes to appear in Tarantino's take on the story. Cho spoke about the planned film during an appearance on Larry King Now on Ora.tv. When pressed for details on the film by the venerable King, Cho said he doesn't know anything about it. But Cho said he'd love to do some classic "Tarantino dialog" as Sulu.
Cho and the rest of the new Star Trek cast had big shoes to fill when they took on their iconic roles in Abrams' 2009 reboot. While the new Enterprise crew didn't by any means make fans forget about William Shatner and company, they did establish themselves in their own right. Whatever mistakes may have hampered the maligned follow-up Star Trek: Into Darkness were not the cast's fault. The third Trek adventure, Star Trek Beyond, did better with hardcore fans but faltered at the box office. With the future of Trek up in the air, Paramount has taken the drastic step of bringing in Tarantino, a move that not all Trek fans are on board with.
Though old-school Trekkies may have reservations about Tarantino's involvement in the film franchise, the Trek cast itself has good reason for excitement. Actors love working with Tarantino and with good reason. The director writes great dialog, and gives actors juicy roles that let them really stretch their abilities. It should come as no surprise that Cho wants in on Tarantino's Star Trek. The other actors have yet to sound off on the issue, but you can bet some of them have the same feeling Cho does.
